I got a question for everyone;

When at family tree parties, how do you role play your relationship with your spouse?
- Your family tree self based off who you are exactly.
- Adapted your personality to fit the "world" your spouse came from.
- Or create a whole different character that you play as?

I think I adapt my personality to fit in more with the "world" my spouse came from, since there's certain things I would do in this world that wouldn't fit in with a dwarven woman in Middle-earth. Even in my back story fan fiction, if I'm not sure if dwarves would behave in that way, I just leave it out. It makes it more believable, but I do know that if dwarven women can't get the one they want, they simply take no other, so I put that into my story. For Marida, it's Thorin or nobody (much as it would be with me. When I'm hung up on one character and/or actor, I really have no interest in anyone else. One at a time, please).

After I chose Thorin as my spouse, I had to make my character a dwarf, since a dwarven/elven pairing wouldn't work with Thorin (way too much friction). I've never been much of an Elf fan anyway, so this is no biggie (not that I dislike them or anything, I guess I just don't have that much in common with them, so I find it hard to relate to these particular characters. I've always preferred the other races of Middle-earth; hobbits, men, dwarves, though not necessarily in that order). :)

Understandable.

I'll answer my question too. I created a entirely different character. Because I would not make a good elf at all. I think if I lived in Middle Earth, I'd be a dwarf.

With Erin, I used some small traits of my own. They are there, but not many of them. I made her at least half elf, because I know that Thranduil would never marry a human. But Erin still had to be human enough to have been married to Faramir for a while. I play heavily on the fact that both Erin and Thranduil are too alike, and conflict with each other. Their marriage is far from perfect. If they lived in the real world, their relationship would never have lasted long enough to even be married. He wants her to be his beautiful little wife, and she wants him to treat her as equil. Which of course he doesn't do, because he doesn't really tell her anything.

Taken from how I came to like Thranduil, in the fact that I made a banner, and it took 3 hours to make, which could have made me either hate him or develop a crush, they felt nothing at first, then noticed each other. Their story is the typical case of felt the first spark of love, rushed into marriage. Once the first spark is over, they are like now what?

I always try to play myself, though to be fair its probably a more heightened version of myself, e.g wittier, not actually named Lembas :)

To be honest, I don't actually understand why in family parties you wouldn't just play as yourself, they're there for fun. You don't have to worry about plot or sensible back story, as otherwise they'd be in the RP forums, plus the parties are for the members NOT their 'characters' :). Everyone accepts that you're married inexplicably to some hearthrob, so you don't need to worry about the serious stuff, which for me tends to make RPing incredibly boring.

I feel adapting your personality to fit a world is ultimately the same as creating a new character. No matter what the authors argue, I find Original and RP characters are always based off their author, or to fulfill their wishes.

I find that creating a character heightens the fun for me. I get to be me all the time, so it's not fun to be me in something that is close to an RPG. I guess that was why I hardly posted in parties that I didn't miss, before I changed spouses. I understand your point. I guess that is the good thing about the parties. You can be yourself, or have a character.

I guess, that even if we do play as ourselves, it is still a character, because they exist in a world we don't. I do dissagree with the wish fulfillment part, though. The kind of original characters I create for stories, I'd never want to be them in a million years.

I think it can depend on what turn the party takes, on whether or not you are yourself or a 'character'. Just whatever you feel like doing. Or maybe tread in the world of both? Be yourself, but toss in a flare or two of a 'character', perhaps that would match your spouse. Its all good fun! :)

Easier said, than done for me. If I really did play as me, I wouldn't even be at the party (I avoid those in real life.) And I wouldn't be married at all. On the rare chance that I did show up, I would probably be sat in the corner either playing my 3DS, or scribbling a story on a notebook. I wouldn't even leave it for the party food. So I guess that it is best to keep as a character to keep it fun for me and everyone.

When this party ends, I guess I won't post the other party idea I had. I did come up with one that would be fun, with lots of excitement and a sort of plot. Just for a change.

My family RP character is actually my own character, with all its traits and quirks. Although "Lhun" is probably a lot more sociable than me  I'm not too fond of parties, although I'd love to go to a party where you can actually dance on beautiful music, or have a drink with friends. So yeah, if our Tree parties would happen IRL, I'd probably behave the same way as I do on the boards.

I prefer playing myself because I don't have to come up with a backstory. For RP's I enjoy creating a new character, and really think about why that character would act in a certain way in a certain situation, but the Family Tree RP is more relaxing when I can just be myself. But I have to say, I think it's really cool that you take so much time and effort to come up with a backstory of where you met your husband and all! I just married mine out of the blue ;-)

I've had the back story idea for a while, so it's fun to explore that idea, even if it is in a fan fic (I was originally going to start a role play about it, but I didn't think there would be enough interest in it, so that's why I decided on a fan fic). I always wondered what it would be like to be in Erebor during its hey day, so that's why I set it just prior to the attack by Smaug. It's not like I could have us meet during the Battle of Azanulbizar (I think I'm finally spelling that right), since there were no women present, so setting it around the time Smaug attacked Erebor made more sense. Also, Richard Armitage said something about Thorin having a wife and being killed by Smaug, so I thought to myself: What would happen if he were to save her from that fate? So I got the idea from a few different sources, but I'm going to need a little help once we get to the exile years, since the prologue to AUJ doesn't show us much what happened during this time, so I'm really going to have to be imaginative about it. :)

Come on, post people... I don't want my first hosted party to die before the end. Just kidding. Or am I?

Yeah, I guess that is a curse with me. Whenever I create a character, I want to know more about him or her. Why they are doing what they are doing. What lead them to be there. What happens next and so on. It's probably why I have so many unfinished stories.

(sorry Erin, been working for the past few days and haven't spent a ton of time on here other than popping in for really quick posts here and there)

My feet feel like they are going to die...no...correction...they want to die, so they can quit throbbing. Amazing how a week away from my department store job can make my feet and legs forget what all that walking around the sales floor feels like!

That's alright Tink, everyone gets busy.

It's one of those times, when I wish double posting wasn't so frowned on. There is so much I want to do at the party, but don't want it to get overlooked, because no one notices the edit.
This party is fun for everyone, right?

I think it's fine to double post if you want to move on in the storyline/tell something important Erin. Especially with so few members around right now it's okay to give more input ;-)

Oh, cool! I spent about two hours last night creating fun party games, and using some ideas from shows that I'd seen, for another story, but I realised it could work for our party. I'll have to find my notebook with them in.
I would post now, but I can't find my notebook. My mother keeps tidying up after me, and never tells me were she put them. So then I have to make a huge mess, while I look for my stuff. Then get shouted at, for making a huge mess.

I have prizes too. I've Middle Earth theme named them.

α - A Tale of Old - A drabble or short story about your fave LotR or The Hobbit character.
β - A Portrait of thy Beloved - A set of your chosen spouse. If not LotR or The Hobbit based, pics will need to be provided. Possibly from a screencap gallery or something. You know what my style is like.

There also is the possibility of a poem, but I'm not great at writing those. I'm learning to write ballads at the moment.

I'd be willing to try both of those options (like I need an excuse to talk about Thorin or look at pictures). So, if our chosen spouse is from LotR or the Hobbit, we don't have to provide pictures (just thought that I would ask first, and as long as I don't have to make them, since I have no idea how to do that, or have the computer to support those kind of programs)? And don't worry about not being that good at writing poems, because I don't think that I am either, so perhaps we should nix that idea. ;-)

The one problem with living in an apartment is the neighbors (especially when they're noisy when you're trying to sleep), but at least they're not as bad as one downstairs neighbor I had in my last place. She accused me of banging on the walls, when it was actually my mom that was hanging up Christmas lights. She even threatened to tell on me, but didn't, because obviously my landlady was getting tired of her complaints. My present one is much nicer (and bigger), since now when we have a wind storm, I don't feel the building swaying to and fro and being fearful that it will collapse at any moment.

I should get another post in the party thread by tomorrow at the latest (after all, it is my kingdom), because I keep getting distracted with TORN (especially with the CHOW threads that I host), as well as my back story fan fic. :)
