Haha nice one (Beaker). Well a lab experiment full off controlled explosions and fires would be much more fun than 5 hours of endless titrations! But it's ok anyways. All the calculations though... I'm a soon-to-be geologist, I'm not used to numbers like these!

I spent a fair amount of time in chemistry labs as a prospective chemist (which I did not end up being, but I can still spot people spouting Baloney Slices about chemistry!) up to about 40 years ago. People have such (movie mad-scientist driven?) misconceptions about what scientific lab work is about. What ended my attempt at becoming a chemist was physical chemistry, which just got too mathematical and physics-like for me.

Lol too true Anduril. It would be more fun, I guess. That is cool! I know very little about geology, myself. What type of work are you schooling towards?

Gandolorin: Yeah it feels like the more chemistry you learn the more math/physics you have to use. I mean, at least here when I was younger (like 13-14) chemistry in school was mostly practical and theoretical (e.g. learn about the elements), and "cool stuff", as far as I can remember. I don't think we had many experiments but I think the teacher did some. We certainly didn't do any calculations at least... I guess that is where the misconceptions come from, if it is the same in other countries Jax Nova: Well I'm very interested in the academic world and have been thinking of a career in research (if I get the chance ). But otherwise many geologists work with groundwater, pollutions, infrastructure, in mines and so forth. It depends a lot of where one work, because where I live we don't have any volcanoes or a lot of tectonic activity so to get jobs like those one have to move to another country, usually. Like Iceland But geology/geosciences is a broad term so there are many different jobs.

Starting in late 1975, I worked in a laboratory of the company that I later joined as a commercial administrator. One of my oldest friends in Germany had done a vocational training (high on the practical side) when we first met in late 1975. I went for University studies in commercial administration instead, perhaps my most serious mistake. After having to dump the University studies side (very theoretical) at the age of my about mid-twenties, I went for the (to me then very new) vocational commercial administrator education. Meaning that I often knew where the University-derived theorists were just thunderingly wrong. But the parasites that end up in the decisive upper echelons are just so pathetically ignorant.

It seems that there is a problem in many professions that people know a lot about the theory of things, but less about how it actually works in reality. One regularly see things I usually call "desktop product" (directly translated, don't know what the english word is), something that has a logical thought behind it but clearly doesn't work anyway. So I'm not surprised to hear that you often knew the theorists where wrong... Of course it can be the other way around as well. Both parts are needed I guess

There’s an old cynical joke that “combines the two”: “theoretical” means nothing works, but everyone knows why; “practical” means everything works, but nobody knows why. We have combined the two: nothing works, and nobody knows why.

Sounds pretty interesting. I guess once you have the credentials there would be a lot of possibility open. I must admit, studying the volcanoes sounds kind of fun.

Gandolorin: Haha that's a good one! For every situation Jax Nova: Yeah volcanoes are cool! I hope that I some day will get the chane to be really close to a volcanic eruption...

When Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980, Mom says there was ash on our patio, and we're quite a bit north of Washington state (in another country, to be honest). I was only 8 at the time, and don't remember much about it (except what I learned about it in school). We were living in a condo at the time, but only lived in the upstairs part and rented out the downstairs (or at least I think that's where we lived, since it's such a long time ago). Even my favorite fictional places have volcanoes (which is why the Jurassic World sequel has me a bit on edge, to say the least, but perhaps I'm being a little too paranoid here, since even Middle-earth has a volcano, perhaps even more than one, since it's been a while since I've read any of the books).

If you like JRRT’s Middle-earth and volcanos too, the only place to be is Iceland!
