You realize that there are a lot of hills in and around Seattle. Maybe how you describe it would fit Georgetown or Allentown along the Duwamish River, but go less than a a mile from the river in just about any direction and you are in some solid rock hills.

The city I live in (115,000 inhabitants) has a wide flood plain where any sort of building is prohibited (and we’re not talking about Rhine or Danube River widths here, nor depths that could not be crossed with fly-fishing apparel!). Not that criminal “developers” haven’t tried, in various guises, to circumvent this prohibition. Think property sharks trying to sell property in Florida bordering on (within?) the Everglades swamp. While there are no hills of the kind you describe as being around Seattle, we don’t need such hills because of the flood plain surrounding the – eh wot? stream? I have seen it being flooded (from by necessity elevated roads) to a width that exceeds both Rhine and Danube Rivers. To reach us where we live, it would need to become as wide as the Amazon River, and I mean very far downstream. A totally different situation to the time we lived in Frankfurt, the one bordering on the Main (pronounced mine) River, not the one in the now eastern part of Germany bordering on Poland, on the Oder River. A tributary to the Rhine River, with buildings having closed up far too close to the river bank (and again there we were lucky to be the odd furlong away from the bank). If you canalize a river, get ready to drown when the canal overflows massively (you may be lucks, your descendants will at some point in time curse you.) We were close to having or cellars flooded once, very close, as older inhabitants told us about earlier floods ...

Tevildo, Prince of Cats

The ski jumping Four Hills Tournament (German: “Vierschanzentournee”) is starting up next weekend. In Oberstdorf, Germany on 30 December, the “New Year’s Day jump” in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on 01 January (duh!), Innsbruck, Austria on 04 January, and Bischofshofen, Austria on 06 January. Winning this is bigger than an Olympic Gold Medal (kind of like the FIFA World Cup championship is rated much higher than an Olympic win, though not quite as drastic a difference).
