"Miranda!" he whispered, before embracing her like a daughter.

"What happened?" she asked. "Why are you out here?"

"They burned down the house," he said.

"What?!" she asked. "And what about Gabriel? The others?"

Ben looked down for a moment.

"What?" she asked. "They aren't dead, are they?"

Elizabeth sighed and gave up struggling, knowing that Tavington was right.

"Thomas is dead..." he said.

Miranda's jaw dropped slightly. "And....and-?"

"They took Gabriel anyway."

Miranda paused, then nodded and said, "And what about the children?"

"They're with me, most of them..." he said.

Elizabeth looked up suddenly when she felt one of the soldiers cut her loose. He grabbed her shoulder and pushed her toward Tavington. He grabbed her and pulled her up onto his horse and they galloped out of the campsite

Miranda nodded. "What do we do now?"

"Find Gabriel and Elizabeth," he said. "Tavington got her."

"He did?" she asked, "I thought she got away...she escaped before I did..."

"He sent them after her," he said. "You were fortunate, but must hide from now on, until this war ends."

Miranda nodded. "And now we must find them both."

Elizabeth sighed, and then saw Gabriel. Her eyes widened and he looked at her with an apologectic look.

"Yes," said Ben.

"We shall wait until morning, then, I suppose," she said.

Ben nodded. "And so we shall."

They rode throughout the night and Elizabeth was growing wearier by the moment but she didn't want to fall asleep near Tavington.

Miranda awoke when Ben shook her shoulder. "Mr. Martin?" she asked sleepily.

"Yes, come along, Miranda."

"Sir, it is barely dawn..."

"And the perfect time to get started."

Miranda shrugged. Her father had fought alongside Ben and taught her all the things he learned in the war, so she understood right away. She grabbed her knife and said, "What shall I do?"

He looked at her. "Wait until we get them, then make sure no one is tailing us."

Miranda nodded, and they started off.

Tavington looked at the girl, and he sighed, but pressed his horse to go further.

When they arrived, Ben told Miranda to hang back in the woods as he, Nathan, and Samuel rescued Gabriel and Elizabeth.

And so she waited for what seemed like forever. After her shadow had moved considerably, she heard a twig snap behind her and drew her revolver. "Mr. Martin?" she asked.

"Yes," he said, putting it down with his hand.

"Did you find them?" she asked. He motioned behind him; Elizabeth and Gabriel were walking towards them. She ran toward them and hugged Elizabeth first, then Gabriel, who she noticed hugged her a little harder than last time.

Elizabeth smiled, her tiredness evident in her features. She yawned, since she hadn't gotten any real sleep in around two or three days.

"Elizabeth," said Miranda, "Oh, are you alright?"

"Yeah...just tired." she explained.

Miranda nodded, then looked at Gabriel and went up to hug him. "How are <i>you</i>?" she asked. "Are you alright?" she asked, meaning his wound.
