Mr. Tumnus cried some more and tried to start talking in between his sobs, "I'm....I'm..." He blinked as clear tears dripped down his face, "I'm in the payment of the White Witch." He looked as if he were shaking when he mentioned her name.

Mira stops just in the trees past the lantern in Lantern Waste, but when she sees the light in Mr. Tumnus's house, she creeps over and listens. At his confession of being in the pay of the White Witch, a fierce, almost feral look comes into her eyes, but she keeps her peace and waits to see what he will do with the Daughter of Eve.

Mr. Tumnus gently took the handkerchief and wiped his nose. His sad face soon turned to amazement at the last comment Lucy said. "Why..she's the one who has Narnia under her icey thumb!" His voice started to quiver as he raised his voice,"It is she who makes it always winter here!" He then started to sob as more tears fell voilently from his face, "And never Christmas!"
