I got called a goth the other day. It was meant as an insult. It was kind of funny.
There's a long story behind it, but basically I had stood up to a group of peoples who were intent on stealing our soccer ball. So they came and insulted me. It was really funny. The longest word they used was 'friend'. But yeah, off topic.
I dont see how 'goth' is an insult, really.

And I like black. Its starts lots of arguements, because 'officially' it isnt a colour, but a shade.

I also listen to heavy metal. Not alot, but I do. I dont see why appreciation for a certain genre of music, and a liking for a certain colour leads people to assume that you're something.

But yeah. If your a goth (as in the cultral/nationality thing) arent you also 'gothic'? Like someone from England is english, and someone from Rome is roman?

Nope, just because you wear black and listen to heavy metal does not make you Goth. Although just because you're Goth doesn't mean you can't listen to bands like Good Charlotte. I think today people are so focused on what you can or can't do within all these certain subcultures that they forget to find their own meaning to what it means to be Goth (or Punk, Pagan or whatever subculture you belong to).

I wouldn't call myself a member of any subculture, however I am extremely fascinated by Goths and Pagans. I listen to everything and anything (from Nightwish to Good Charlotte, and from Eminem to Enya) and wear whatever clothes I find comfortable at the moment. I'm just being me.

The Goths were an East Germanic tribe which according to their own traditions originated in Scandinavia (specifically Gotland and Götaland). They migrated southwards and conquered parts of the Roman empire. Two closely related tribes, the Gutar and the Götar, who remained in Scandinavia and are often called Goths1, are separately treated, as Gotlanders and Geats respectively.

they were also divided at one point to visigoths(western goths) and Ostro goths(eastern goths)

I love history...

I rest my case about that...

Yup that's true. I live in the province of Östergötland (Eastern Gothland) :)

oh yeah will i was going to give a denotation of the word goth and gothic. but I wont. I mean ill admit it i sorta like good charlette and simple plan.

I think goth is a lifestyle like celtics and stuff liek that.
I think there was an era in Europe when they had a gothic era but I am not sure about that.

HEH ture true. I just like being myself.

I find that some people just listen to a genra of music. and i think that is lame. like my friend for instance she likes only one genra of music death/black metal and she really doesnt open to anything else thats to "softcore" for her. and i think that is just lame..(I'm just saying that cause shes my friend.) I mean I listen to eminem, nightwish, lacuna coil, the 69 eyes, some of the Numetal stuff. And I tell my friend about it. "Oh thats sounds like ****. At least I give music a chance.

Yeha i dont think Goth is an insult either. I get called that all the time but it doesnt mattter. THey are just joking about it most for the times.

I think its an unorginality.

hehe...

I don`t know how I should... well I myself can`t be considered a goth, but perhaps slightly gothic I think... if you look for a goth... then my cousin is the one to turn to... I went to the same class for three years with her and she almost always wore (since the eight grade)black and wore black make up not to mention those spike bracelets....

funny thing that this year I also had a cousin in the same class, but his school will be interrupted by the amy since he has passed gollege once, but now he wants to go trough a technical one...

You don't have to like black to be gothic :annoyed:

It depends on your dark, twisted attitude and dark, twisted characteristics :bones:

And of course, twisted fashion/music sense :punk:

Lol! Sorry, but that made me laugh so hard!

There are so many stereotypical versions of 'Goth' and 'Gothic', it's near impossible to actually remember what the real definition is. Eru posted one [or two] that made real sense... :D

Hmm..interesting topic.
Ask 100 people the same question, you'll get a variety of answers.

I'm not so sure about this 'new' description for Goth that has been mentioned.
I myself have been diagnosed with 2 forms of depression, I have moments of anger at the world and paranoia. I like black, most of my clothes are all black. It's a preference thing, nothing more. I like dark themes, characters, stories ect.
However I would never, ever describe myself as goth or a goth.
Other people will and have done in the past, I just laugh because I know in myself I'm not.

I'm curious as to what people would describe as goth music.

Im not gothic at all, and I hate it when people lable me aposer becuase one day I decide to were black or teh next day I decide to wear bright orange, I am who I am. Im very random if I like it, ill were it, or if I like that music, I will listen to it no matter what steriotype people think it falls under. So I practically hate the lables but if other people like them, thats ok with me I just dont.
