Taurquende wrote: I'm going to say what I said last time: I think of a balrog is basically a huge shadow (and some flames), and shadows and stretch and change, so a balrog can. I think when it wanted to appear intimidating, like it wanted to with Gandalf challenging him. But they weren't actual "wings" they were just shadows of wings. So he couldn't fly back up when he went down with Gandalf.
I have to agree with Taurquende. I think that they are mere shadows of wings

I've always wondered this...I'm liking your theory Taurquende. It makes sense. To me Balrogs seem like an undefined shape that embodies evilness (don't know how else to put it lol). They don't really have wings or legs or anything they're just this form made up of flames and shadow that can move through the air. That's how I see them anyways.

*Sigh* If only Tolkien said if they did or didn;t, then the arguements would be DONE. Though it's good to have a mystery. Check here, it's a very good place to look for this particular topic.

Slightly off topic, but can emu's fly?
A balrog could be a sort of... evil emu. No, thats offensive to Tolkien actually, Balrogs are much more eviller!

Balrogs were maier corrupted by Morgoth/Melkor. Gandalf was also a maier, not corrupted, and had equal power. I think the Balrog may have had wings, but Gandalf had some power over him. Most Balrogs were defeated a very long time ago, but the cowardly ones fled. So maybe that balrog of Moria was a weak one and couldnt fly? I really dunno...

That's a tough one. You see in pictures of other balrogs that they have wings. The balrog of Moria is explained as shadows that appear to be like wings.
I'm clueless on other balrogs....

Well, I took a look at the picture Alessae posted up and it does look like they have wings - they look like a bat's wings. You've all posted up good points.

I do remember the balrog having wings in the movie but if you remember from the movie I think Gandalf mentions something about the balrog bieng made of shadow and flame.

True. But maybe perhaps the shadows and flames are in the shape of wings?
