I love all manner of classic films right through from Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the Marx Brothers, to the great romantic comedies, thrillers and dramas of the 40's and 50's.

I would love a banner too, but there are so many wonderful movies and stars, much pondering will be needed.

And yes, I have seen Humphrey Bogart in "Sabrina" (as it was known in Australia) with William Holden and Audrey Hepburn! It was utterly delightful and far superior to the recent Harrison ford remake.

Cary Grant Fans:
There's a wonderful movie called "An Affair To Remember" with Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant, where they meet on a cruise and fall in love. Have a tissue handy, and waft away to a different world.

There's a lot to talk about isn't there!?

Yes, it's called Sabrina in Britain but I thought it was more commonly know as Sabrina Fair. I haven't seen the remake but I don't watch a lot of modern films so that's not surprising.

Take your time picking your banners as my programme is having problems.

I actually have seen An Affair To Remember and I enjoyed it very much even though it was sad. Deborah Kerr is, I think, a very under-rated actress but she made it to Hollywood and starred with lots of big names such as Cary (they were also in The Grass Is Greener) and Robert Mitchum (the Grass Is Greener, Heaven Knows Mr Allison & the Sundowners).

I've seen these as well, The Grass Is Greener being very funny.

And I've very much enjoyed Robert Mitchum's films, too.

As for Cary Grant, well, has he made a bad film?? Not that I can think of....
And, he was equally good in both comedic and dramatic roles.
That Touch of Mink, Operation Petticoat, An Affair to Remember, I Was a Male War Bride, The Bishop's Wife, Night and Day and Arsenic and Old Lace being just a few favourites that I can recall off the top of my head.
And the Philadelphia Story... more fun.

It always amazes me when people can nominate one favourite film, there are so many, that even thinking about choosing causes me to have instant brain freeze, so it will be fun talking about the many different ones we've enjoyed.

Hmm..I haven't seen all of An Affair to Remember (I've seen parts though)..I really need to watch it all (we have it around here somewhere...I think?). But I love Cary Grant in Arsenic and Old Lace, Bringing Up Baby, and various other movies of his. And I love Deborah Kerr in The King and I.

I also love Errol Flynn! Especially in The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood.

(And I just want to mention that I love love LOVE your icon, Astarte. )

Cary Grant is one of my favourite actors. I LOVE Bringing Up Baby it has got to be one of the funniest films ever. My favourite actress is without a doubt Katharine Hepburn. So any film with those two in has got to be good. Makes me smile just to think of them.

I LOVE that too! Have you seen the earlier version with Greer Garson and Rex Harrison as the King? That was magic, too. I never saw the Jodie Foster version so can't comment on that....


Ahhhh! Errol Flynn! Wasn't he the best ever Robin Hood? The rest just don't stand a chance.

Those two in The Philadelphia Story were an absolute treat!

If you look in IMDb he has made SO many wonderful films. And, unlike many other actors, his later films maintained the quality. He didn't just settle for less. There's no-one today that can match him.

Does anyone enjoy the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films? I loved the dance scenes in those.

What about the Andy Hardy films? I always thought they were heaps of fun...

I've always loved the Fred and Ginger movies. I couldn't believe how much chemistry they had. I love the Andy Hardy movies as well.

And I adore Cary Grant, too. As much as I love Humphrey Bogart, I don't think there's anyone who has ever been more suave and sexy than Grant. Ever.

Did you know that when making Houseboat with Sophia Loren he fell for her hook, line and sinker. He was desperate to marry her, but she felt they werte too alike and opted for the more stable Carlo Ponti instead....

Yes he was ever suave. Even when playing the clown he never came across as foolish. Do you remember him in I was A Male War Bride? He was dressed in female military garb with a bobbed wig, he was hilarious. He never seemed to take himself too seriously, and yet who was more elegant?

I think George Clooney sees himself in the same light??? But he doesn't have the body of work that could even vaguely compare.

In an interview Freed said that Ginger wore lead weights in one particular gown to make it flow and spin the way that it did. The weights in the sleeves kept hitting him in the face but they ended up leaving them in because the dress just didn't follow her body as beautifully without them. I just love they way they just would come together so casually and do this marvellous routinue and then separate and walk away at the end of it. Everything so understated and, again, elegant.

I don't think Gene Kelly was a patch on Fred, but I did like his Singin' In The Rain number. That was very special.

Does anyone like the Marx brothers? Groucho, as the wonderful rascally Rufus T. Firefly, is someone that I am very fond of.

I actually am not particularly fond of the King and I but the performances were excellent. I haven't seen the earlier version of it but with Rex Harrison and Greer Garson it will be worth watching.

I'm not a huge fan of Errol Flynn - I don't think he's the best actor ever but he cetainly suits the type of roles he plays. Such as Cpatin Blood and Robin Hood. I can't think of anyone else who could have played them/ The role of Robin Hood was actually written for Jimmy Cagney but he (wisely) declined. As much as I love Jimmy I don't think he would have been very good as Robin.



Yes, they were. I've just ordered the Special Edition DVD so I'm looking forward to that arriving. But let's not forget Jimmy Stewart. Him, Cary and Katharine formed by Dream Team in The Philadelphia Story. Three of my favourite actors all together. A joy!

Some of Cary's films were less than perfect but he's so good in every film you forget that.

I LOVE Fred & Ginger films. I have just ordered a box set of them as well! The stories are funny and actually quite well written for a musical and the dance numbers are magnificent and the songs are memorable. I know the dress in the Cheek To Cheek number caused Fred lots of trouble as the feathers used to tickle him! He always made it look so effortless. But to be fair, Ginger also needs to be mentioned as she is also an excellent dancer (mostly overshadowed by Fred) and also plays her parts very well in the films. In non-dancing roles such as Kitty Foyle and Bachelor Mother (so funny) she is a very skilled actress.

I actually have never seen a Andy Hardy film as they have never been shown. They made a lot of them didn't they?

I agree. Apart from the Singin' In The Rain number I'm not that fond of Gene Kelly. I don't think he was a very good actor whereas Fred was always excellent in scenes that didn't involve singing and dancing. I also like characters more.

True not a great actor, but a marvellous Robin Hood. It's hard to remember him in anything else.

I've never liked this Jimmy, although he did appear in some wonderful movies. I found him personally unattractive,


There was one where he was running around in a Legionnaire's costume that I never liked.
Remember him with Mae West? That was good fun!


They were susch a stunning duo that many people don't realise how many films they made separately and, how few films they actually made together!


We had them on FTA TV as a Saturday matinee occasionally. I think I've seen them all a number of times. They are also on the Classic movie channel on pay TV today.

The African Queen is HILARIOUS. I love that movie! And Harvey is so good, too. Jimmy Stewart is so sweet in that movie.

Haven't seen the Egg and I or Streecar or Baby Doll. African Queen is one of my favourites and the Road films are usually good fun. Suddenly Last Summer was strange and I'm actually not that fond of Harvey which is strange I usually like James Stewart films.
