put it this way... without tom, the ring would either be lost or given to sauron and frodo, sam, merry and pippin would probably be dead, or close to, it seems... the barrow- wrights would not have shown mercy to the hobbits if they were captured for longer than they already were. and i also love his cute little songs- bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow! so for those reasons, and many more, i like tom

and THAT'S why I love Tom - he's so completely pointless and random, and in a way he reminds me of Treebeard/Fangorn. He's ancient and totally in tune with everything, and that's why the ring doesn't affect him. he's so funny - the way he can giggle at something that everyelse speaks about only with great gravity. he's just so totally awsome. i mean, sure, he does save the hobbits, a couple of times, but really he doesn't have any other part in the story, and he adds a bit of levity to a parrt of the story that was other wise quiet serious because there isn't some of the other great characters in the fellowship to give it that sort of fun air. *nods* that's my opinion.

I love the description of him, with the bright blue jacket and yellow boots. He's just an awesome character, and he has a great personality.

I really enjoyed Tom Bombadil as well... and though it would have been fun to see him in the movie, I agree with the sentiment that he would not have translated very well... and it would have been a veeeeeerry long segue from the plot in an already veeeeeerry long movie.
But he's still lots of fun to talk about.
Muahaha.
And there's a great song by Nickel Creek regarding him... "In the House of Tom Bombadil" which, I think, captures the mood perfectly.
Didn't Tolkein write a book about Tom? The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, if I remember correctly. I've never read it myself, but it would be worthwhile to look around for it.

I read it awhile ago, kinda strange actually. Funny while it's at it. Get the "Tolkien Reader." I think it's in there.
I liked Tom, for all practical purposes he's something else. He's no Elf, not a Dwarf, no Man, nor Hobbit. He isn't one of the Valar or Maiar either.
"Before the Dark Lord came from outside."
Before which Dark Lord? We have to assume, since Tom is just there, it's Morgoth, whom was the Dark Lord before Sauron was known.
Before the Valar came to the world? Who did?
Tom is a mystery, and a funny one at that!

Well, in the book he was tolerable, but as a movie character he would have ruined the movie, but thats just me, ignore me if you want.

I really really like Tom, he made me laugh heaps, and he did save the Hobbits. I really wish he was in the movie, it would have brought light to all the dark morbid bits in it, a bit of contradictory, almost.

I really liked Tom. He is a very joyful and good character. And as someone said if there was not for Tom the Ring would probabl be in Sauron's hands and Merry and Pippin dead.
And there is something more. Think how many many posts you have made trying to explain who Tom is.

Tom is definitely cool, saving the hobbits on many occasions. I don't think the hobbits would've made it out of the forest and downs if it weren't for Tom. The sword Tom gave Merry was also crucial to the Witchkings "death". Go Tom!
