Well I've got some info for you guys. This is from "Tolkien: The Illustrated Encylopedia"
Balrogs: The most terrible of the Maiar spirits who became the servants of melkor, the Dark Enemy, were those who were transformed into demons. In the High Elven tongue they were named the Valaraukar, but in Middle-earth were called Balrogs, the "demons of might". Of all Melkor's creatures, only Dragons were greater in power. Huge and hulking, the Balrongs were Man-like demons with streaming manes of fire and nostrils that breathed flame. They seemed to move within clouds of black shadow and their limbs had the coiling power of serpents.
This is what it says in FotR:
It was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man-shape maybe, yet greater.
In both of them it says Man-shape or Man-like which is a lot different from the movie and not how I imagined them.

Hey thanks! You're always the one who provides us with the concrete, long explanation passages in these kind of debates.

((ooh eowyn you're using a banner I made! - sorry everyone random info. ))
I think it's surrounded by shadow and flame, and can sort of change its shape, so that it can make wings if it wants to. In the center I imagine a 'man form, maybe, but greater'.

(I KNEW I'd seen that banner before!)
Yeah, I'd basically agree with Gloredhel, I think it had wings of one sort or another.

The Balrog are Maiar, or lower angels they were corrupted by the first Dark Lord, Morgoth.

Taurquende wrote: I'm going to say what I said last time: I think of a balrog is basically a huge shadow (and some flames), and shadows and stretch and change, so a balrog can. I think when it wanted to appear intimidating, like it wanted to with Gandalf challenging him. But they weren't actual "wings" they were just shadows of wings. So he couldn't fly back up when he went down with Gandalf.
I agree with Taurquende but if my memory serves me correctly I don't think Tolkien gave much describtion of the Balrog, which is why there's so many different drawings and pictures of it. I myself was surprised at how they portrayed it in the movie. I like the lower angels bit and I haven't heard of that. Maybe they do have wings but is there really a single answer at this. The lower angels might not have wings just as many other qualities of them are different of what we portray as angels.
