*agrees greatly with above statement*
He made a mistake. We all do. His was very drastic, but he was willing to make up for it and accept responsibility for it. That makes him very strong.

yes Boromir made a mistake because he was a human.and it's possible to make mistakes for a human.it don't makes him weak.he used his all courage to defend merry and pippin.

Boromir was both weak and strong. Strong because he volunteered for the Fellowship. No one made him. The choice was his own. He went through a lot of pain just to insure Merry and Pippin's safety. Weak because he nearly attacked Frodo just to get to the Ring, but he can't really be blamed for that. Few people can resist it's evil.

I was thinking about it last night, and I think that He's both. He was weak because he gave in to the temptation of the ring, yet he was strong because he was willing to make up for it. So in his weakness he is given a chance to show himself strong. Yet, if he hadn't given in to temptation, that would have also provent that he was strong. Hmmmmmm

I agree with Nauriel Rochnur. He is weak just like we all are weak...how many of us would have given in to the temptation of the Ring looong before? Just some thoughts. *smiley*

I think we can all agree that none of us would have fared better than Boromir did.

He made a mistake, that is true. But he tried to make it better, he defended other hobbits and he did have the courage to admit his mistake, and that shows strength.

Boromir is a strong and mighty man, but the ring is what makes him weak. That's what I think.

Its not the ring, but the temptation to use the ring. He gives in to that temtation. The ring isn't some zappy thing that makes you weak.

^ Yes. And he just wanted to take the Ring because he was convinced it would save his home and his people. If our homes, and family, and friends were in danger, we would all do whatever we had to to save them.

In opinion, I defer to the chorus of reasonable and thoughtful explanations give prior to my own entrance, but remain curious on one detail which has remained a key note to all speakers-
We speak of Boromir's "weakness" as succumbing to the evil of the Ring. By this, do we refer entirely to his last moments of madness, attempting to take the Ring from Frodo by force in order to insure his own glory, or do we bring in the entirety of his stance on the Ring, that it should be employed as a weapon against the Enemy for the glory of Gondor?
I ask this merely for clarification and curiosity, as one of these I personally can see as weakness, but the other merely as opportunistic nature. What would you, then, hold as "weak"- the loss of control to obtain the Ring, or the wish to use the Ring at all?

I am coming more from the stance of Tolkien who believed that the weakness and evil came from a lust for power, and the will to dominate. So that would include not only Boromir's attempt to take the Ring from Frodo, but also his initial desire to use it as a weapon against Mordor. Boromir wanted the Ring to make him a powerful leader. It's a kind of hubris I suppose. He probably did not understand what the Ring was capable of. Boromir may have just been thinking about his own land, his own status--but clearly he did not truly understand what the Ring was, so you can't just condemn Boromir completely for his delusions.
What I love about Boromir is that he is completely human. And he shows what is human in us. Yes, we do wrong things, we think false ideas, but in the end, we are still capable of doing very noble things.
I am interested in knowing what you think about this, Isildur's Bane?
