for some reason my avatars are all more than 29 kb (limit here on a-u)... that's so sad :(
Would it be possible to set the limit elsewhere?

It doesn't matter what size the avatar is if you have it linked elsewhere. When I have a large avatar file size, I usually upload to imagshack or tinypic. You'd put the link in the "Link to off-site Avatar" part in your profile.

well but that's what i've done... :( I uploaded the avvy at tinypic and added the link in my profile but it always gives me an error

Make sure you're entering the URL in the "Link to off-site Avatar" box, and you should be fine.
