YAY! There are others here who make clothes! I have made a dark blue crushed velvet cloak with white satin lineing, a green tunic with trim, a reversible poncho loosely based on Legolas' poncho at the Council of Elrond, and I have every intention in the world of making an Arwen dress for my banquet at school this spring.
And as far as suggestions on fabrics go: crushed velvet is very beautiful, but a pain in the neck to get the nap right. I never managed too, but it hardly matters. My cloak can't pick a color anyway. It keeps varying between deep purple, two shades of darker blue, and black. (I swear the velvet I bought was swapped with some from Lothlorien!)
Anyway... yeah...
How hard was it to make the Arwen dresses? I am but a novice seamstress, and anything to complicated will end in total disaster! Any tricks or tips for one such as myself?

Ahh! How come I didn't see this?!
I love costuming, though I'm a complete novice.
So...
Several long skirts , a shirt , a generic white cape , just today I made a hobbit skirt! ...and a few other things I can't think of at the moment. I'm working on my Eowyn White Wool muslin, and my Susan's Archery Dress Muslin .
For the costumes I'd like to do...I can't list them all. Eowyn's Reffugee, Arwen's Reforging, Rosie's first and last dresses, Eowyn's Starry Mantle, E's Coronation, A's LBG, an original Goldberry, a generic Gondorian, and many others.

Come to think of it...I don't know if you want helpful notes at all, but I have a few...
Simplicity patterns- the armscy tends to be very tight, so always make a mockup. You'll be in trouble if you use your good fabric, because you may not be able to move. McCalls has that problem occasionally, like with 4480 and 4491
Another great pattern company with closer period patterns:

Yeah, I heard about it, however the ones I use thend to be very large sleeved (meaning it falls open) and I cut the pattern a bit larger then needed.
