The Second Edition includes a wonderful Preface to the Second Edition which includes a 1951 letter from Tolkien to Milton Waldman which is very useful in understanding Tolkien's motives and themes, in my experience anyway.

I have this edition too, and I love the huge appendix at the end!!! It's very helpful the first time you read it with the names/places. It tells you what all of the names mean too, which is cool.

I have the first american edition (originally my dad's, and so old the jacket is long gone XD). It contains:
Ainulindale, Valaquenta, Quenta Silmarillion, Akallabeth, Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age, family trees (house of Finwe, descendents of Olwe and Elwe, house of Beor, and houses of Hador and Haleth), chart of the sundering of the elves, note on pronunciation, index of names, appendix: elements in sindarin and quenya names, and a big fold out map of beleriand in black and red. (there's also a smaller map in the chapter "Of Beleriand and its Realms").
I thnk they're all more or less the same.

It is a good read. It contains a history of how Middle-Earth was created and the first Dark Lord.
