One thing I found interesting about Napoleon was his defeat in Russia. Naploeon made the mistake of going into Russia in the Summer thinking he would be out way before winter ever came. Unfortunatly for him the Russians kept falling back deeper into Russia and when winter did finally hit a lot of Napoleon's army was anhilated because they weren't prepared for the harsh Russian winter. He went into Russia with somewhere around 600,000 men and only 30,000 made it back home. Of course many of those men died in combat but a lot died because of the harsh winter.

Another interesting fact about Naploeon in Russia, he actually left his troops behind and went back to France, that *beep*.

Every leaders own ignorance and arrogance will ultimately be their doom, Napoleon and Hitler both underestimated the Russians. Russians always had the clear advantage against their attackers, they had a vast land that they could flee back to so that only logically makes the enemies war efforts harder...

or you could invade in early spring when Russia is warming up, giving you a year to get Moscow(This would've been especially good for the germans super fast Blitzkrieg tactics)

Yeah 600,000, at least that's what it says in my AP euro history book. Its astounding how many people died during one invasion.

I agree. At Stalingrad for example Hitler did not allow his troops to draw back, so most of the soldiers died (one of the dead was my grandmother's brother) and all the others, who survived, were imprisoned.

hitler may have not had the best military mind, but he was a great politician before he began to descend into insanity. he could bluff and be allowed to annex entire nations!

True, the brits and french(not to mention the other nations) were fools to take Hitler`s word for peace

as were the french....and we all know how that turned out. Blitzkrieg was just too much for the world

the magginot line wouldn`t have held out, but only slowed the germans I guess, but how stupid can you get frenchies! They made twice the same mistake... the military geniouses of the french army during WW2... who?

Hmm I have a question that I was wondering about. I never fully understood why Britain did not fall under German control during WWII. I'm not exactly sure why the bliztkrieg worked elsewhere but not in Britain.

Blitzkrieg could be more described as a land strategy, but the battle for britain was fought in the air and in that luftwaffe failed. I believe that bombing the cities has truly a major effect morally, but I think it has it`s good side since when you anger somebody they are twice as worse.

but thats rather irrelevant... well I guess Luftwaffe should have gone after Britains industrial power, factories and such to disable their capability to arm themselves more and of course the airports. If luftwaffe had destroyed britains air force Germany could have easily gained the upper hand and then true land invasion of britain could have began... but you see blitzkrieg is to hit your opponent quick and hard I guess so I don`t know it kinda failed in a long term against USSR...

But in anycase..

My main point, Britain was saved because Luftwaffe screw up in destroying britains air force(or they never even tried... ) and a landing in britain sounds sort of folly don`t you think?

Yeah if Germany had invaded Britain by land the U.S. would have entered the war a lot sooner than they did and that would have been bad for Germany.

Probably, but funny thing that Germany was the one the declared the wr on US...

Any sense? Nope, all tough japanese were partof the tripact I think it was a rather stupid thing to do... and one reason why the land invasion wouldn`t have succeeded was the cannal and the british navy...
