Another pair of feet was heard on the gravel path. A girl walked into view, carrying a small book with the corners of its yellowed pages sticking out from under the cover. Her brown tunic was rumpled and her shoes were worn. She stopped and backed up when she saw Diti and Rye.
"I'm sorry," she said, "I didn't mean to intrude. I'll go."
Both of the girls looked like they were rich, or at least well off. The poor girl knew from experiance that most people such as them would be disgraced to be seen in her presence. She knew it would be better if she just walked away.
