In the year T.A. [Third Age] 1636, a plague struck Middle-earth. It would become known as the Great Plague because of its immense devastation. It is not certain what caused this plague, nor is it certain what illness plagued the people. However, it is known that thousands of people died during this one year alone. Among the race of Men, not one person could be found who had not lost a loved one. Among the Elves, most survived, but some even of this great race were lost. Among the Dwarves, a great population were found to be dead, but some were able to recover from the disease, for they are a hardy folk. Even in the Shire, where the Halflings had settled only 35 years before, there was great loss.

The plague struck hardest in the lands of Gondor, and of Rhovanion, where the plague was said to have originated. It is believed that over half of the population in Rhovanion was found dead after the end of the plague. Gondor, too, had great loss. This included the King and his immediate family. The rule of Gondor passed to the King's nephew, Tarondor. Besides the loss of the King, the White Tree of Gondor perished in the plague. In that year, Tarondor found a sapling from the former White Tree. He planted it in Minas Anor, the Tower of the Sun. In addition, he planned to move the capital to Minas Anor [This would not be completed until T.A. 1640].

After the plague had finally passed, concerns arose in Middle-earth, primarily in Gondor. The Corsairs of Umbar, who had left Gondor in the 15th century, had attacked only two years before. The Gondorians were worried that the Haradrim might strike again while they were weak. They have very few forces left, and even Cirith Ungol has been abandoned. Fortunately, the Haradrim forces had also been devastated by the plague, so they were in no condition to attack. Nonetheless, Gondor needed to be on its guard, but they did not have the forces to do so.

In the North, the ongoing struggle between the people of Arthedain and the Witch-king of Angmar continued. The DĂșnedain, who had surprisingly survived the plague, continued to combat the Witch-king and his forces.

In Rivendell, the Elves took in many survivors of the plague, including one or two who had mysteriously recovered from the plague. Rivendell was full of life, primarily men and women who had come to find peace. The Elves taught them much and aided them in their emotional struggle.

Now it is the year T.A. 1637. The survivors of the deadly plague now face the extremely difficult task of rebuilding Middle-earth. The Gondorians now face a series of attacks from the Haradrim. Rhovanion is decimated, and its people now wonder if their kingdom can survive. The people of the North, including the DĂșnedain, Bree-landers, the Rivendell Elves, and the Shire-folk, are now learning how to handle tragedy, and must decide what they can do to help their world.

Each person in Middle-earth has a choice to make. They might travel South to Gondor's borders to aid that kingdom in its struggle against invasion. There they would find themselves engaged in a battle to keep Gondor alive. Or, they might join Rhovanion in rebuilding and staying alive. Food and resources are limited, and the people are in need of great aid. Perhaps there is a way to get them the resources they need. Or, a person might join the DĂșnedain, and help them to fight against the Witch-king. Or, perhaps a person might find a way to do more than one of these, depending upon their allegiances.

And allegiances are the most important things these days. Groups of survivors travel together with common purpose. Middle-earth has never seen the amount of travellers going across its lands ever before, and will not see it again, at least as far as is known. Friends and companions come together to do what needs to be done. And honor is won and lost as the rebuilding of Middle-earth continues.

Though this time would be remembered by future generations as a time of tragedy and is not considered worth remembering, the people of this time will look back on these days as an Age of Honor for Middle-earth.
