i read it first.it was happier than the LOTR.more innoscant.i like the story of how tolkien read it to his children and somebody who visited read it and grabbed it and ran off to a publishers and said"look what my tutor wrote!"

yes exactly. It is better for children than LotR, it's also much easier to understand I think, because it's less comlicated.

^And too, it would really set the background for the LotR movies...for those who haven't read the books. Because The Hobbit really ties everything together between time before the ring of power was found again to the time of the fellowship. I wonder who would play what parts!

I think it is the most beautiful fantasy book and the part about Gollum and Bilbo's riddles is very clever. I wrote my thesis about riddles and quoted Gollum and Bilbo. IAs a book I prefer it to the following trilogy

I have been reading LotR to my boys and it seems like we ended up doing it backwords because we will have to read the hobbit second now. I suppose it doesn't really matter. It kind of leaves us with another adventure to explore after we get done with LotR. Although my 13 yo wants me to get him the SILMARILLION. Anyway, how many times have some of you read LotR? I think there is plenty of adventure ahead!

Well I have read the hobbit 4 times ( read it in 1 day ) read the sill twice, unfinished tales 1nce and all lord of the rings once. and i am only 13.

I have read The Hobbit countless times and I think it's a wonderful book. I had read it over and over before I even tried reading LOTR, although I'm not really sure why. Riddles in the Dark was my favorite chapter. The way the scene was written was so perfect. It felt kind of spooky as I was reading it........ like, "oh my goodness, if Bilbo gets this wrong he'll be eaten!" except of course, I knew he probably wouldn't get eaten that early in the story. The adventures in the story were great, and I loved the characters. most of the characters in the Hobbit walked right off of the pages for me, I could see them really clearly. With the LOTR trilogy, it took me a bit longer with some of the characters to get a clear image of them in my head.
By the way Sinbearer, I think that's awesome that you read LOTR with your kids! I wish my parents had done that for me when I was younger. It's a great idea!

I loved The Hobbit It was so great. I don't think it was childish at all and it gave a great view of middle-earth except less complex. I actually read the hobbit after i read LOTR and the silmarillion
and i have to say there is so much behind the hobbit that a person who read it first before seeing or reading LOTR would miss. The Hobbit is certainly a great classic that you could enjoy as a kid or an adult

LOL my fav part was when they went to Beorn;s place and kept coming in pairs ... that was really cute
