I don't think JK Rowling copied Tolkien. I think her books are quite different from LotR, especially since they are for a different audience.

Besides, I think it is impossible to read something like the lord of the rings and not be influenced by it in one way or another. Plus, fantasy all have common themes and characters running through them and that is why they are grouped under one genre. You can't claim that something like Elves are your creation, because they have been around for centuries... Tolkien got his ideas from a lot of places other than just out of his head, and I'm not surprised that other authors do the same. However, that's another discussion. ;)

I think the TTT easter egg draws certain Dobby/Gollum comparisons...

I didn't mean that JKR copied anything, she was just inflenced and inspired by Tolkien and I'm sure by other authors as well.

but but but but....gollum is so much COOLER AND BETTER!! i mean, yes kreacher might mumble, but does he go to the extent that gollum goes to? does he have complete conversations, arguing agressively with himself? i think NOT, yes he is crazy, but did he spend hundreds of years alone, in the dark, depising himself and the ring, and needing something he despises??? huh? NO! kreacher does not come close to gollum's awesomeness.....besides, gollum is not as ugly :annoyed2:

You don't even know what Kreacher looks like, so how can you say that?

well acording to the book, kreacher was very ugly...hmm okay...he looked very old (i know gollum was older but he didnt age cause of the ring, though he was very much corrupted) he had hair shooting out of his ears, and, well, i dont know....you see my imagination portrayed krecher as uglyer than gollum, probably because he betrayed my favorite character in HP and his actions killed sirious indirectly....soo technically the statement "kreacher is uglyer" is not a fact written in stone, because both gollum and kreacher are imaginary....and though one was illustrated in a movie, it was only one man's imagination....

Gollum is my favorite character too. My nickname was gollum in my old school

Yeah, I didn't take it that you thought JKR had copied. :) I agree that I think it's more influenced and inspired.

I personally think it'd be hard to write fantasy and not be inspired or influenced by Tolkien...

I agree. with what you are saying Herenya, but some of the things in her books, are too close to LOTR to be on accident. Nazgul/dementor... i'm sorry, but thats just a little strange. There are some others that are a little to... similar.

Alot of people however go wayyyyyy over board, like comparing Butterbur and butterbeer... thats exagerating just a little bit I think....

Yeah true ... what about Gandalf and Dumbledore, though? I'm certain they have almost the same personality...

Yeah, well add Merlin to the picture along with Obi Wan. They are pretty much almost the same. Still cool though so I have nothing against them.
