Whenever I use the magic wand tool to crop out backgrounds, like this one:

I get really pixely edgesa, and it always goes too far out so I get some of the back ground. Does anyone know a way of getting rid of these and smoothing out the edges?

Instead of using the magic wand, use cut and float, it gives softer edges

For example:

Voldemort 1:

and then with top half + arm removed:

Okay, not the best example, but you get the idea!

What software do you use? There should be a feathering option for your free-hand selection tool (I'm not sure about the magic wand tool, though). Try setting it to 10 or 15 pixels for small images like avatars, or 20-35 pixels for larger images :)

In Photoshop, I know that sometimes image when they're cropped out and moved can get really pixel-y. That nearly drove me mad when I was trying to do a blend of Sailor Mercury.

Th magic Wand tool does not work that well in Photoshop for selecting. Try setting a feather-select it, then right click the slection, set the feather, and go from there.

Microsoft picture it, Dad won't buy me Photoshop. :annoyed2:

And I'll try and find this feather tool. I have soften, that might work.

Ah, picture it...I used to use that! Try using the "Create cutout" tool, and then use Edge Effects >> Soft Edges to soften it up :)
