Heh heh. Silmarillionity-ness must be both. I'll admit -- the back of my silmarillion book is well worn from flipping through time and time again. Additionally, my sister bought me this flipping awesome tolkien illustrated encyclopedia! and theres this map book too.. its got all the books' stuff, time line journies, etc. and the tolkien companion has been quite helpful also. ^_^

Actually an year ago when I finished reading the Silmarillion for first time I was a little confused but now when I've read the book more than ten times I'm finding it captivating and it isn't boring at all, everytime when I read it I learn something new.

Sometimes i just put the book away because it was so difficult, but sometimes i just got him from my desk and then i woud just go and paging in it, because i love the way Tolkien describes everything.

^ah well, lucky you, Larael. My parents just have very old, aging books that I've never heard of - they gave me this one about the English language and how to properly write essays - it's actually very useful. :) :bye2:

Oh cool! I'd like that book, I usually have to write essays for school (and I'll probably have to write even more now that I'm going into highschool) and I stink at writing them! :)

Well my all my dad used to talk about( before work got busy) was LOtR so I learnt most of what was in that book from him...so it was actually somewhat of a review for me. I thought it was very captivating and compelling at some parts(especially anything about the elves...oh and the Dunedain) From there I moved on to The Lost Tales(again a review thanks to daddy) My dad is a brilliant man :) :)

I was totally confuzzled when I read it the first time. I tried to read it over and over again, but it didn't make sense because I was trying to read super-fast and thought I'd understand everything the first time. Now I'm re-reading it and taking notes as I go along. It's making perfect sense, even though I'm only on the first chapter. Good book so far. I'll probably be obsessed with it by the time I'm done reading. I try to explain it to my family, but they're a little confuzzled too. (All the names and places and stuff).

^I was totally confuzzled when I read it the first time that I had to write down all the character names, what race they were, and if they had any relation to another character. My list got quite long and finally I just threw it away and finished the book. :)

I am currently reading "The Simarillion" and I think it is captivating. Sometimes I can't keep up with all the names and places, but the map and the appendicies help me a lot :-D . Right now I am reading the chapter on "Maeglin".

I just finished reading "The Silmarillion" :bounce: and I think this book is absolutely captivating! I understand "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy much more than had I not read the book. I would recommend this book to anyone :

I know the Sil is not to everyone's taste, but I was hooked from the first time I read it. The first time, I didn't figure out a lot of it, but it sounded so wonderful so I went back and read it again and it all started to make sense! I think that the Silmarillion is an amazing epic, great, but not in the way the Lord of the Rings is.

Then again I am a Mythology/language freak and I read the back of Retun of the king to pass the time untill someone told me about the Silmarillion. I was exstatic when I finally found out who Elbereth was, I had been trying to work that stuff out on my own.

My case is similar to most who have read it-The first time, barely scratched the surface, nay, my head; second, I understood enough to do a book report; third, I decided what I was going to be when I grew up(well around the general area).

I am somewhat like Isilinde. I am a history/language geek. I hope I don't sound conceited, but by analyzing certain parts of a word, and how it applies to the noun it might be associated with, I can carve quite clear picture of what the english translation may be(though of course at times looking up the definition of an elvish or old english word[for the Rohirrim], is done to help progress, or cement my estimate). I've done this countless times (more recently, as I said I believe I know what I'm going to be when I grow up [which I figured outonly this year]).

Therefore I love the SIlmarillion for its boundless store of names, places, and the fact that it's more or less a history book.(Or at least it reads like a historical volume; like the Bible).
