It hardly ever works to break up with someone and still be their friend. I mean, think about it. By dumping someone, you're giving them the message that they're not the right person for you, and this should not be taken light-heartedly with a, "Oh, well, we can still be friends!"
This isn't what you or your friend wanted to hear, but, frankly speaking, she can't have both guys.  Your friend wants to break up with the guy she's currently with. That means she's completely dropping anything that the two of them had...it's not like they can kind of sort of be on close terms. When you break up, that's it. Relationship over.
Sorry to sound so frank, but it's sort of something I feel very strong about. And I'm not saying there's no chance that they can't be friends. I'm just saying that it's rare. _________________
