I think it's more of his father's doing, than his own decision. Draco really doesn't have a choice, ya know? Unless he can stand up to his father...

Why would Snape be helping Harry because of Lily Larael?
Well... oh gosh, there's no way I can explain this without going in to detail, so be prepared. Here we go:
First off, let's start by analysing the chapter "Snape's Worst Memory".
Why was Snape down there by the water's edge that day, close to the Marauder's if he knew they had a history of taunting and teasing him? He had some sense he might have gone someplace else, just to get away, but he didn't. Why you ask, because of Lily. He wanted to be close to her, as did James Potter.
Later, when James is busy tormenting Snape, Lily steps in. But not as in innocent bystander, as most people would assume. I think she stepped in because Snape was her friend, and she cared for his well being. How could this unlikely friendship come to be though?
The answer is Slughorn, Horace Slughorn. As we know, he was the current Potion's Master when Lily, James, and Severus were at school, and he played host to the wonderful "Slug Club". Of course we can assume that both Lily [we all know about her being one of Slughorn's favourite students], and Snape [because of his adept Potions skills] were both members, and had to endure many of Slughorn's party's together. Both being in the same year, and with Lily's amiable nature, I'm sure they became very close. But how close we can only guess.
My assumption is that Lily viewed the two of them as friends, nothing more. But, as for Snape, I think he fell in love with the one friend he had ever known... that person being Lily.
Okie-dokie, back to the lake scene. It ends up that Snape is so angered he calls Lily a
mudblood- forever damaging their relationship.
So, this brings me back to the reason we are having the conversation. Snape is working for Harry to help avenge Lily's death. After all, he's the one that told Voldemort about the prophecy in the first place. He's just as guilty as everyone else.
So, there you have it.

Wasn't too long I suppose, now was it?
