Well yes that is a fact yet they are not a threat like they once were a long ago in the carribean, what ended the golden era of pirating I should ask

Well I was curious about this as well so I looked it up. What I found was the golden age of piracy began roughly around 1713 when the war of the spanish succession ended and many privateers in the English and Dutch lost their jobs. Also around this time there was a booming slave trade to the americas and lots of ships to attack. The golden age ended somewhere around 1730 when the American colonies became better equiped to ward off pirate attacks.

I'll join! *Wonders how he hasn't seen this before* I specialize in Imperial Rome, but have amassed random facts from all ages and continents.
"The decline of piracy in the Caribbean paralleled the decline of mercenaries and the rise of national armies in Europe. Following the end of the Thirty Years' War national power expanded. Armies were codified and brought under Royal control and privateering was largely ended; the navies were expanded and their mission was stretched to cover combating piracy. The elimination of piracy from European waters expanded to the Caribbean in the 1700s, West Africa and North America by the 1710s and by the 1720s even the Indian Ocean was a difficult location for pirates. The famous pirates of the early 18th century were a completely illegal remnant of a golden buccaneering age, and they could expect no more than eventual capture. Contrast this with the earlier example of Henry Morgan, who for his privateering efforts was knighted and made governor of Jamaica."
Yay Wikipedia!

The only problem with wikipedia is that supposedly anyone can post there, so you don't technically know if the info you've got in 100% accurate.
Oooo I love roman history, that and medieval history are my fave subjects to study.

Sadly true...
funny how the roman empire was a great power with huge land and then it collapsed because of it`s greatness in a way, I mean for barbarian hordes such the Huns it was an obvious goal as their empire matched that of the romans not to mention the goths, franks, vandals and picts that all wanted own lands. Goths for example conquered a part italy and had a kingdom there
It was funny that the romans actually payed picts that they wouldn`t cause any problems as the empire was in trouble in it`s last decades or something....

I decided to look more into the fall of Rome and what exactly caused the barbarians to break through the lines, because I mean if you think about it the Roman empire lasted for hundreds of years without a major threat to the empire. Apparently between a period of about 49 years there was intense turmoil and civil war going on through the empire. So the Roman army was too preoccupied with "creating and destroying emperors" to pay attention to the borders of the emprie allowing people like the huns to break through. Which eventually lead to the western part of the empire falling apart and the moving of the capital from Rome to Constantinople.
I <3 my history text book .

yeah, which would be taken over by the turks in May 29, 1453 as the byzantine empire would finally fall along with it`s last emperor Constantine XI yet his sons survived and the youngests, Thomas Palaiologos`s daughter, Sophia Palaiologina (formerly named Zoe, lol), married Ivan III grand prince of russia thus making russia the third rome in a way...
Behind the marriage was the pope whom tried to unify the churches(catholic & orthodox) yet this attempt failed

Intersting....I still don't think of Russia as a "third Rome" just like I don't see the Holy Roman Emprie as a "third Rome." I love the quote that says the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, Roman, or an empire.

The Holy roman empire is considered as the 1st reich, the german empire unified by Otto Von Bismarck is considered to be the 2nd reich and of course nazi germany was the 3rd reich....
And yea... I can`t see Russia as the third rome as to me there were only two rome`s, at first the intact roman empire then the divided empire... by the way, I just thought of the sassanids whom were the last persians to rule or well not the last yet as the muslims took over the middle east. Anyway ever since The Achaemenid Empire there has always been a great eastern nation, unless you do not count the empire of alxendar that fell quite quickly in the end.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... Empire.jpg
(quite an empire, one of the main reasons the persians were able to maintain their empire for 300 years was the fact that they allowed people to maintain their own religious beliefs whatever they were as long as they were citizen of the empire. The jews actually wrote that the persians were somewhat noble in the matter all tough in the greek books persians were described as somewhat of terrible etc... funny how victors usually write history, I mean history would be radicly different if nazi germany had triumphed in WW2)
ANyway, the persians rule ended in alexanders coming yet was soon to be followed by the Parthians then by the sassanids and then the muslims, there were some muslim empires yet mainly the turks were left standing. After the disolution of the ottoman empire there hasn`t been a great power in the middle east, if you really think about it...

Interesting, I haven't done much study on the middle east yet. Hopefully we'll get to it in my college history course.
On a side note the Persains were the only outsiders that the Romans didn't consider barbarians. Being cosidered a barbarian by the Romans had nothing to do with your beliefs, etc, just if you lived outside the empire. I think that's quite interesting, just shows how much of a great power Persia was.
Hmm I had no idea there was a first and second reich, I mean it should have been obvious but that fact just went right past me . I actually read a book entitled the Fatherland by Rober Harris and it talks about Germany if Hitler had won WWII. It's takes place somewhere around his 75th birthday I believe. It's an excellent book, great read. If you like historical fiction then I highly recommend you read it.
