Its common knowledge that I hate Harry Potter and the reasons for doing so. But I just wanted to say that LotR rules forever! lol

I voted for like 'em both the same... I think it's hard to compare them. It's just because LoTR and HP are so popular.
I absolutely love to read the Harry Potter books although Harry and his temperament can be a little annoying... I just can't decide whether I should wait for the translated Danish version of Half Blood Prince (comes out in October!!!!!) or whether I should just read the English version...
Is it hard?? I'm reading nr. 5 in English and it's not that hard...

I love both!!!!
I can't choose one right now. There was a time when I hated HP but when I read the books, everything changed. After reading Half Blood Prince, I think I like HP even more. I felt like I could identify with it. LotR books are amazing because of the world and the history in it and HP is more contemporary(I think that is the right word) and I there are some things that I can relate to.Don't you guys get me wrong, is my opinion.

This is so right!
As for me, I'm a fan of both.

ACK! Harry must die!!! *Pulls out wooden steak* I have read ALL the Potter books, so I can say with conviction: LOTR is infinately better. I disliked them before I read them(Every kid in my class is a Potterhead. It's all they talk about! *Dies*) now, after reading them, I loathe them.
LOTR FOREVER!!! I WILL BE A RINGER UNTIL DEATH(And maybe beyond:vampire:)!!!!!!!!!!

I'm often asked this and i have the same reply each time:
I do love Lotr more than any other series of books but i also like Hary Potter!
I don't think you can really compare the two as they are quite different. Even though they may seem similar to some(usually those who haven't read Lotr and only seen the films), Lotr has so much more depth than Hp.
It's unfair on Hp to compare it to such a masterpiece as Lotr!

I completely agree. Right now I'm kinda going through a Harry Potter phase with the sixth book coming out so right now I'd say that I prefer HP. Normally I prefer LotR but I go through phases. With books and movies and bands and basically everything my favorites always change

I also agree. I like Harry Potter but I personally think that LotR is the best thing to happen to literature since Shakespeare (not meaning that I like Shakespeare better than LotR), and I think it's way better than Harry Potter. Comparing the two is like comparing a tree to a seed (the tree being LotR and Harry Potter the seed). LotR has much more to offer than Harry Potter.

Well LotR might be be the best thing that happened to Literature after Shakespeare (though I strongly disagree with that) but Harry Potter's the best thing that's in reading for a long time especially in children's reading. Think of all the children who can't wait to read the new Harry Potter book. These are kids who normally wouldn't totch a book and would watch TV and play computer games instead.
Also because of Harry Potter being so popular people are taking far more notice in other books which are more aimed at children. Books by people such as Philip Pullman and Malorie Blackman are (deservingly) sitting on both children's and adult's shelves in book shops.
I can't really say which books are "better" but at the moment and for the last while I'm enjoying Harry Potter far more. I might switch back to LotR again though I can't see it happening soon.

I couldn't possibly choose between the two I love them pretty equally, but in slightly different ways, that I can't really describe. As for movies, I would say hands down, LotR movies are better, but I think in some ways LotR is more adaptable to film than Harry Potter. In HP, many of the things work on the page, however they aren't very believable on film, making the movies a little cheesey. I can still enjoy the movies, however, especially the first one because the kids are so small and cute
*cough* so yeah, I root for both.

I like both series. I absolutely love Lord of the Rings, and I like Harry Potter. Both are at the top of my favorites list. Lord of the Rings just has a different feel to it that I like better than Harry Potter. Yet, I can't wait to see the next Harry Potter movie!

I love the mythology and lore and languages and RPing for LotR, but the darkness and difference of Harry Potter is also appealing. It's not like I'm going to go Wiccan or anything (which doesn't have to do with the witchcraft in the books anyway) but I like reading the HP books and seeing the movies and reading (well-written, not Mary Sue or plotless smut) fanfiction. As for LotR, I really like discussing the lore and languages and learning all I can about Middle-earth and its people, creatures, places, languages, the art of it, etc. etc. and RPing as if in Middle-earth (I don't RP as if I'm a random Hogwarts student or such, it's just not fun).
