I'm not sure I understand that part... you mean you don't think he's brave both in the book and movie?
Mmmm.... his hair ribbon, isn't that a bit of a stretch to not like him?
Mrs. Gamgee: Lol, I still regret that, I never meant for you to feel scolded or belittled. I'm still sorry for that! And you're right, we were a lot avid of fans back then but I think I'm still an avid Raoul-supporter.

don't worry,
you did no such thing.
No belittling or anything, but, there was scolding involved. And i think you wanted it. It was necesseray, lol, even when i read i was just like "woah, she's serious" and you were, and pretty darn correct.
That hair ribbon..is pretty interesting...lol.

Ah, okay.
I actually find the hair-ribbon a cute boyish look for him. [giggle]

Kitoky wrote: Love triangles are always so very dramatic. And what you say is true, Johnny's Fan. Erik would seem to need Christine more than Raoul did, but how he seemed to want to win her love was a bit rough. It seemed so that way in both the play, movie, and at times in the book as well if my memory is working correctly. The Phantom is indeed a very angsty character as in his situation and backstory and understanding and sympathy and compassion as the Phantom pointed out would have probably been helpful in his situation. He probably accepted the fact that everyone will probably be in horror of his face, but he was always hoping that someone in those masses of people (though still horrified) would care. Raoul could have been understanding (I'm not particularly sure, and I'm not willing to bet that he would seeing as though they never really developed his character as much as Phantom or Christine). In other circumstances he could understand if the Phantom did not directly take Christine away leaving everyone worried, or make such disasters in the Opera House, or take her away mysteriously to her father's grave and try to entrance her once more. It's really all from point of view, Raoul had only seen what the Phantom has done in pursuing Christine. And I agree with you, Johnny's Fan, that in the end of the movie --- they could have developed Raoul into a more likeable person to the audience with a look of sympathy and understand especially after witnessing Erik's total emotional/mental breakdown to Christine. But this is a really good plotbunny for fanfiction writers.
Yes, I suppose that the way the Phantom went about trying to win over Christine was to people on the outside a bit violent, although I believe Madame Giry knew no harm would come to her (as she said Christine was like a daughter to her I don't think she would have endangered her, not even for Erik's sake). Having said that, Christine had not suddenly begun being taught by the Phantom, so Raoul's alarm at hearing her talk to someone behind locked doors (understandable for him but at the same time we the audience knew it was nothing to worry about) was slightly a "calm down dude" moment. It was to me anyway, as if he was the only one who had a problem with this (I also can't help wondering how different eveything would have been had he not appeared on the scene). This happened quite a few times, and I couldn't help thinking he over-reacted to certain situations. I wish he had been told exactly what was going on from the beginning, rather than him finding out bits of information, here and there.
But I also agree that his character was under-devoloped - as the guy who gets the gal, I think more background history or more of an insight into his character would have been ideal.
Juts for the record - I like the hair ribbon, I didn't like his hair loose.

I admit, using Raoul as a point of view for the audience to learn the story of the Phantom was pretty much the only way they could possibly have learned of the Phantom's history and still keeping the mysterious aura around him (Phanny).
There was also Meg Giry. She was also afraid for Christine's safety.
I've always wanted more interaction with Madame Giry and the Phantom instead of passing notes and her doing his every will. The impression didn't seem right as how in the movie Madame Giry saved the Phantom and then ends up doing his bidding. There must be a sudden change in there that made Madame Giry do some of the bad things he wanted her to do.
I know in the book Madame Giry started doing his bidding (when she found out about him) because he promised her to make Meg a star, or the empress of some play... I don't remember.

There were some very strange looks from Madame Giry. The scene at the ball when the Phantom says Christine must go back to him, you see Giry looking and smiling as if that's what she really wants to happen. Personally I don't think Madame Giry did his "bidding" but wanted him to run things his way. He never actually asked her to do anything bad - just simple things like making sure he was paid etc. But, I would have loved some scenes between them.

It seemed like she wanted Christine to go back? Hmmm. I never really got that impression.
I've always wondered what he needed to be paid for?

Well the impression I have always been under is that she understood that he needed her for his music and so she, Madame Giry told the amangers that Christine could sing Think Of Me etc etc, as that is what Erik wanted.

Well that's in the book.
I'm talking in the movie --- he talked of no plans of gallantly sweeping Christine off her feet and enjoying a happy life together. I always imagined he'd get his food from the people living in the opera house.
And it just seemed like he never step-foot out of the opera house unless it involved Christine. And it would be quite weird to see a person in black with an odd mask walking around buying groceries.

Didn't eat air?!! That's so funny. And of course he was paid for giving lessons and writing music, and I would presume he had to but a lot of the stuff we see in his lair and of course his "air"!

I think Madame Giry would most probably buy anything he wanted.
