Dumbledore knew that Draco was going to try and kill him [or had been trying all year], but he knew that he wouldn't be able to. So, he asked Snape that if all else failed, he would be the one to do the killing. That's what Hagrid heard Dumbledore and Snape arguing about in HBP. That's the reason he and Harry started those lessons too. He knew he'd die, and he wanted to make sure Harry would be prepared to go out on his own.
What I can't understand is why Dumbledore didn't try to stop his death from happening. Smart man, Dumbledore, but he confuses me sometimes.

Not at all, JKR doesn't want others to write sequels.
That comment aout Lily was v. interesting, I never look into stuff that much I just don't get why Snape btrayed them in the first place, he doesn't seem to be like Wormtail who joined Voldy cos he was scared.

THAT'S EXACTLY what I've been saying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ACK!! Thank you SO much for saying that!! Now I know I'm not the only person who thinks like that!!!
That second post explaining it all is literally EXACTLY what I've been thinking!!! There's definately something more between Harry and Snape...so YAY!!!
And Amoniel, it's not bad to say that. That's what I've been thinking ever since I started these books so many years ago.
*sigh* Haven't been on this thread in a while....wow.

Thanks for explaining (again ) Larael! I understand, but I have the same question as you, why wouldn't Dumbledore try to prevent his death?
And Amoniel - I've heard that too, but I'm in denial I don't want Harry to die!

DD had a plan he was going to die bc he wanted harry to go on by himself and do things on his own... plus well DD just plain old... stupid theory but yeah, thats mine
^lol i dont want harry to die too, but it would make sense

I don't thinkDumbledore's death was actually planned but it was inevitable because Snape made the vow to do so, to keep up his cover. I also think Snape saved Harry saved Harry's life on the rooftop of the castle.
Remember Malfoy noticed two broomsticks,Snape would have noticed them also, so he knew Harry would be there too.
Dumbledore seems to plead for his life when Snape plans to kill him, but I think he pleads for Harry's life.
In the end Snape orders everyone to get off the roof quickly so.. well I think SNape is a good guy
I'm sorry if yo uall concluded this before but I was too lazy to read through all these pages..

Yup, that's pretty much what everyone else has said Will. Except I still do think Snape and Dumbledore had everything planned from the begining. That's just the way Dumbledore is, ya know?
Ya know what ticks me off, the way the people at Dumbledore Is Not Dead.com are still going on about how Dumbledore just can't be dead, after JKR officially pronounced him so. It really bothers me!!

^^ Jep, Dumbledore is dead.. He couldn't surivive and Avada Kaderva..Only Harry did. Another thing (also probably discussed over a hundred times) do you think Sirius is really dead?
I don't want him to..

Yes he is. That's the thing with Jo, when she kills someone, they really are dead. Believe me, I didn't want Sirius to die...but alas he is.
But you're right about Dumbledore. There's no way he could survive. Look at it this way: he's an old frail man who was just killed by the worst curse in the book. No possible way of survival.

What you say about JKR is true MB, it's just I still can't believe that Sirius is really dead. I just feel like there's a catch somewhere that we aren't aware of. As you know, he wasn't killed by the curse fired at him, because it was a stunning spell, but because of it he fell into the viel. Right now, I don't think we know enough about the viel to make a concrete decision.

Totally- JKR isn't the kindof person to leave loose ends untied up, she won't finish without telling us whet the curtain really does. If she wanted him completley dead, she'd hit him with a curse or something, not a thing like this which is so open ended.

Wouldn't it be neat if Harry actually went into the viel to get Sirius or something. That'd be really interesting.
