Yes, I think that he aged a lot emotionally throughout his quest if that makes sense. He changed a lot and grew a lot throughout that short period of time.

And I think he felt like an outcast when he went back to the Shire. I mean, that he didn't feel he belonged to the quiet living in the Shire. he had grown out from his hobbit life, knowing the truth of pain, sickness, hunger, weariness, and torture. I'd feel that way if I were him.
