Athel marched up the Population Police station, its entrances flanked by four Dark Coats. He entered in the office of the Senior Captain of the Population Police. After saluting, Athel reported, "Sir, five Thirds have escaped in Sector 4. We have two battalions searching but they are eluding us."
The captain frowned and then said, "Take three more and excute order 435: seek and destroy."
"Yes, sir," was Athel's reply. He saluted once more and exited the building, radioing police base as he did. Sector 4 was the location of the majority of the New World's medical research facilities. If any information about that area leaked out, then the results will be very embarassing.

Cara lay on the bed in her room, staring at the darkened ceiling. After a close call with the Population Police, she had to leave her curtains closed. Upstairs she heard the door open and close-her siblings were home. She lay still, knowing they'd come downstairs soon, to tell her about their day in the world she couldn't live in.

Adam knew it was strictly forbidden, but he couldn't resist to put the curtains away a bit, looking out of the window. The world under him seemed so happy to him, he would never see it. Suddenly, he heard a shouting. "ADAM! What are you doing here?!" Adam turned round. "N-nothing", he said quickly. "I-I only wanted to look-" His mother put a tablet of food on the floor. "You know you're not allowed to go out! Don't start this topic again, Adam!" The boy nodded.

Cat threw the small penknife at the treetrunk again, hitting the middle and gouging out a section of bark as she pulled it out.
The forest around the town had been her home since she could remember; her parents had'nt wanted her- she had been a mistake. It was disturbing to her, she knew her parents were in the central inteligence service and had sporned the attack on third borns.
Yet she had sworn, if she ever had the chance, she would kill them for it.
Pocketing the knife, she swept her sleek black hair behind her ears, and glared towards the city, her eyes burning with emerald fire.

Lee put on her long dark black hoodie over her red t-shirt. She dark blue eyes looked around her room, which was nothing, really. She tied up her long black hair as she slipped on an old pair of sneakers, then she walked over to her window, unlocking the lock and pulling the certain back. "God protect me." She whispered before she climbed on top of her bunk and leaped out the window, then she took off running into the depths of the forest, away from hiding, away from enslavement, away from fear...or more near to fear.

"Hey Cara!" Cara's older sister called quietly as she came down the stairs.
"Hi Summer."
The girl, one year older than Cara, sat down on the side of the bed.
"How'd school go?"
"Fine." Summer answered.
Cara sighed. That was the same answer she got every day. <i>Why aren't you excited, happy to go to school, to be a normal person?</i> she wanted to ask her sister. <i>Or would you rather be like me, living in the basement practically my whole life, all I know coming from my siblings and parents?</i>

Athel stopped his car near the police base as four Dark Coats approached him. "Sir," he called. "We have begun a search throughout the area for the Thirds. We have been checking first the familys that have previous Thirds that were aborted."
"Well done, sir," Athel commented. "Where is the first house?"
"We are to go to the residence of the Pattons. They have previously had a Third but was aborted 16 years ago. We have reason to believe that have borne another child."
"They already have two?"
"Yes, sir."
"Good, let's go."
The officer radioed a squad as Athel drove towards the Pattons'. He hoped they would release the child peacefully.

Lee ran quickly, for that is what she used to do when she wasn't hidden away like old luggage. She ran until her lungs felt like they where about to explode. She ran into an tree to stop herself as she breathed heavily, the forest scents filling her nose and making her smile. But she was still on alert, no matter how peaceful the forest seemed or felt.

Cara was talking to Summer when they heard footsteps pounding down the stairs. The girls whirled towards the doorway. "They're coming!" Cara's brother burst into the room, panting. "The Population Police-they're driving down the street!"
Cara's heart started pounding as she jumped off her bed and ran to her closet. She pulled on a dark jacket and shoes, and grabbed a small bag. Her family had helped her pack the bag several years ago, in case she needed to run. This was the first time she had ever needed it.

Athel watched a Dark Coat took a battering ram and demolished the door. Instantly Dark Coats poured inside as Athel calmly entered, cocking his pistol as he did. A woman began protesting but quickly silenced as a Dark Coat pointed his gun at her. "Check upstairs!" Athel ordered as he quickly scanned the living room. He then declared aloud, "By order of the Senate and President of Wisle, all third children must be detained and exterminated. Those aid Thirds will also be detained and exterminated."

Adam sighed. He missed the world outside, and he had nothing seen, but the attic and a piece of the garden his whole life. He wanted to go outside, he just wanted to be...normal and he couldn't understand the whole thing. He had never been told really, why he should live in the attic, and he had never been told really, why he shouldn't go outside.

Sighing loudly to herself, Cat began the cliff-climb down the side of the hill and towards the town.
Her feet found the footholds easily; she had grown up a here, every tree, every bush, every nook in the rock was famillar..

Nick silently wandered through the forest, as a shadow. She'd learnt to avoid to be seen, for her whole life she'd been hiding.
Now she walked with a quick pace towards the edge of the forest, finding cover in the shadow of every tree. Her aubern locks floated in the wind, but Nicky swept her hair annoyed behind her ears.
Suddenly she stood still and whistled soflty while she looked up to her friend Cat.
"Don't go there.. "she whispered soundlessly "There's a DarkCoat raid.."

Athel paced around the room, eyeing the nervous Mr. and Mrs. Patton. "You currently have two children, right?" Athel asked. "You planned to have a third one but it was aborted. Am I correct?"
When no answer came from them, Athel faced and said, "Listen very carefully and think about your answer to this next question because if you answer wrong, your two children will become orphans, therefore subjected to detainment. Do you have a Third?"

Cara's siblings ran upstairs right before the Dark Coats burst into the house. They were quickly rounded up by the Police and forced to sit in the living room. They sat in silence as the man in charge asked their parents, "Do you have a Third?"
"What?" Mrs. Patton said.
"What kind of a question is that? We know the laws, we don't have a Third."

In the basement, Cara's hands shook as she quietly opened a window at the back of the house. She slipped out, closed it carefully, and vanished into an alleyway.

"Upstairs are clear, sir," a Dark Coat called out. Athel nodded, turned towards the Pattons and asked, "Do you have a basement of some sort? If you do, you will be better off telling me now instead of my men finding it by themselves."
