Well I changed the subject as promised! I've just got Frenchman's Creek from the library so I'll let you know when I've finished. :D

They also had My Cousin Rachel, I have a feeling I've seen the film of that so I'll probably get that sometime. I might re-read Rebecca as well. I just think for a modern authoress she captures thepast so well. :-)

What I meant was for someone who wrote books in realtively modern times (1930's+) I think she managed to bring the 1700's + to life very well. :-)

Well I read Frenchmen's Creek and I liked it very much! I was a bit disapointed with the ending as I thought everything had led up to Dona staying with the Frenchmen so I was a bit shocked when she didn't leave with him. :-( She could have taken her children with her. I think I still prefer Jamiaca Inn but I think the descriptive passages really created powerful images in this book.

8/10 :-)

Well, after I finsih off my library books I'll probably read My Cousin Rachel. I seem to remember seeing a film version of it a few years back, and I read the cover for the book and it looks interesting. :-)

I think I may have 3 or 4 more to read. I'm not actually sure how many she's done.

Neither am I. I think she's written quite a few. I'm starting to read My Cousin Rachel. :D

hey! can i join in the conversation?

i'm so glad there's a topic on daphne du maurier - she's one of my absolute favourite authors and has been since i read rebecca when i was eleven.

i've read rebecca, jamaica inn, my cousin rachel, frenchman's creek, the house on the strand, the scapegoat, the loving spirit, the king's general, rule britannia, the birds and other stories, the rendezvous and other stories, and the parasites.

i once read a review or introduction or something that said du maurier could combine all the elements of popular fiction with the exacting requirements of 'proper' literature, and i think that's so true. her books are always enjoyable and easy to read, but they still have a lot of meat to them (psycological insights, comments on the treatment of women etc). the plots do verge on the ridiculous occasionally (whoever heard of a poet-pirate for pete's sake?!) but i think we can forgive her that.

Yea, I'm sure we can. :)

I think Daphne du Maurier is an excellent writer and I agree with you when you say that she covers a lot of issues very well.

Howdy! Anyone can join topics of mine! :D

Wow, you have read a lot! My three books I've ead are pale in comparison to the amount you've got through!

In Frenchman's Creek the version I have, has an introduction and I think it may have said all the things you have mentioned. I really enjoy reading bher books, although I was a little disappointed with Frenchman's Creek. I think the whole pirate-pirate poet thing is he was actually a man well born, but wanted adventure. I'm probably wrong though as I can't remember much about it!
