CHAPTER ONE

Two figures rode on horse back, a man and an elf, talking and laughing with each other. One was Legolas Greenleaf, elven prince of Mirkwood, the other, Strider, ranger of the north. Although Strider looked very travel worn as any ranger would, he was of the noblest heritages, for he was Aragorn, son of Arathorn, heir to Isildur and the throne of Gondor. Orphaned at childhood, he was taken in by Lord Elrond of Rivendell. Although he was the heir to the lost line of kings, to his adoptive father, Elrond, his adoptive twin brothers, Elrohir and Elladan, and all his closest of friends, he went by the name of Estel, meaning hope. Legolas and Aragorn had been on many adventures together, time after time finding their way back to either Mirkwood, or mainly Rivendell to be patched up by Mirkwood's healers or Lord Elrond, who was a great healer known to nearly all Middle earth.
After quite a bit of talking, Legolas stopped his horse. Aragorn looked back at his elven friend as his smile faded.

"Legolas?" his brow creased, "What is wrong mellon nin? (my friend)" Legolas lifted his hand to signal his friend to be silent. Legolas dismounted and looked around whispering almost to quite to hear,

"something is wrong, the forest is too quiet..." he trailed off and got quieter and just stood there for a moment listening. then he abruptly whipped out his bow and knocked and an arrow.

"Yrch! (orcs!)" At the warning Aragorn whispered something into his horse's ear and dismounted. His horse ran off after his master had dismounted, Legolas' horse followed. Aragorn watched them for only a moment and then unsheathed his sword. Just then, a huge mass of orcs came out of the forest, heading strait for Aragorn and Legolas, and they didn't look as if they were going to slow down any time soon.

"Well, I suppose we just found our next adventure mellon nin." Legolas said as his eyes widened at the amount of orcs they were up against.

"I suppose so." Aragorn said, seeing the same picture as Legolas.

"Then let it be like the rest of our adventures, they die, we go home."Legolas said as he got ready to aim. Aragorn looked at his friend

"Injured." he added to his friend's statement. Legolas fired and hit his
opponent on the throat, felling him.

"Yes well they still die." He said as he knocked another arrow. Aragorn did not answer but smiled wryly and charged into the mass of orcs; all that got in his way died. Twirling around Aragorn sliced all the orcs around him, stabbing one that came from the side, he turned around to see a tall orc with an axe inches away from Aragorns head, but it did not move, instead it fell to the ground with a thud, an elven arrow between it's shoulder blades. Aragorn looked up to see Legolas looking at him, and he gave his friend a grateful nod and resumed fighting.
Legolas went to draw an arrow, but in it's place drew out air, finding that all his arrows were spent, he put away his bow and unsheathed his knives, looking for a good target. His head quickly turned to his left, an orc started to charge him, but before it was even halfway there, it was on the ground, a white handled knife protruding from it's dead form. Legolas retreaved his knife as he passed his dead opponent, only to throw it into another when he got a clear shot.
Legolas fought and fought, until the orcs' numbers seemed to be dwindling, but then he spun around to see Aragorn on his knees, gasping for breath, an arrow imbedded his left shoulder. All he could do was stare at his friend not paying heed to anything else around him. As reality hit him like a bucket of ice dropped over his head, an orc slammed it's balled fist and forearm into the prince, doubling him over and sending his head into a large rock, knocking him unconscious.

For Aragorn everything seemed to go in slow motion, he turned right into the path of an orc arrow that sent a searing pain through his body and knocked the wind out of him. He fell on his knees, trying to catch his breath and then he saw Legolas spin around, and lock eyes with him, he tried to tell Legolas of the orc heading for him but it was almost like Legolas couldn't hear him, only a second later Legolas was lying limp across a large rock, a bloody cut across his right temple. Aragorn felt a rush of air near him and turned around a fraction of a second before an orc-crafted hilt was swung across his head leaving him on the ground unconscious.
------------------------------------------------------
Legolas awoke, his head throbbing and his ears ringing, after recovering a little from his head ache, he looked around. Where in all of arda was he?

"Strider? Aragorn?!" he started to get worried, there was snow all around him, and he did not recognize the sounds of this forest, he turned around, jerking at every noise like it was some creature that wanted to kill him. he had his bow, and somehow all his arrows, although some needed new fletching. His knives, some food, and a change of clothes. But something still puzzled him. if he and Aragorn had been fighting a band of orcs, then why were there no bodies? Why was Estel gone? Why was it snowing in the middle of summer?

"Estel!" Legolas had to find his friend, if he was here anyway. he was injured, probably unconscious too. he could never last over an hour like that in this weather. Legolas stood as still as he possibly could, he listened intently. He had to find Estel.

"Legolas, I'm over here!" came the muffled reply, it was too quiet to hear to human ear, but Legolas, being an elf heard it loud and clear. He rushed over to a pile of snow and saw the corner of Aragorn's overcoat and started to dig through the snow, prepared for the worst. Once he was uncovered, Aragorn spat out some snow from his mouth and started to dust himself off. Legolas watched him for a moment and then looked at him as if he were crazy.

"Legolas? is something wrong?" Aragorn returned Legolas' stare with concern.

"You were shot in the shoulder. You shouldn't be able to move your arm that well." Legolas replied quietly. Realization dawned on Aragorn and he looked down at his shoulder. He unbuttoned part of his tunic revealing his shoulder, on which only a healing scar remained. Although puzzled about how this could be possible, he shook it off, glad to be rid of the pain. Legolas kept looking at his friend for a while, and then a thought came to him. he walked over to a large slab of ice and looked at his reflection. Sure enough the cut on his head was no longer there, and there was no sign that it ever was. He smiled to himself and turned back to Aragorn who was also smiling. He helped Aragorn up and then slung his pack over his shoulder, and his quiver and knives over the other.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Legolas ran his fingers over the fletching on one of his arrows, and soon his serious face was replaced with one of amusement. Aragorn stood in front of him, oblivious to the princes' stare, spinning around in circles, making sure his sword and everything that went in his pack was there. But apparently he was having a difficult time finding his knife which was on the ground in front of him. Legolas cleared his throat and caught the ranger's attention. Aragorn looked up at the prince and Legolas redirected his eyes to the knife on the ground. Aragorn followed his friends gaze, and then picked up his knife and sheathed it. He looked at Legolas, a very embarrassed smile on his face. Legolas just shook his head and went back to what he was doing. After a few moments though, both their heads shot up, there were people nearby; they both could hear their voices. Legolas nodded his head toward a large pine they could climb, Aragorn started climbing, and Legolas put away his arrow and easily swung up in the tree and helped Aragorn up onto a strong branch. he held his bow tightly, ready to knock an arrow. Legolas then looked over to his right where Aragorn was settling on a branch, his left hand resting on his hilt.

CHAPTER 2

"My Lord?" Meldiron walked up to Elrond, Lord of Imladris, or Rivendell.

"Yes?" Elrond turned around, "Oh hello Meldiron, did you need something?" the elf lord said with a smile.

"Um, yes you see, we found a horse...without a rider, two horses actually." Meldiron stopped and looked at Elrond nervously. Elrond knew where this was leading.

"And..." the noldor elf questioned arching an eyebrow. Meldiron looked down at the ground.

"one is Estel's, sir." Elrond sighed and shut his eyes

"And the other?" he asked.

"That would be Antval, Prince Legolas' horse." Meldiron still stared at the ground, and his voice was slightly hoarse, he was still very young by elven standards and had never before been given the job of telling Lord Elrond that his adopted son, Aragorn, or Estel, was missing. Again. And although Meldiron knew the elven lord somewhat well, he did not know how he would react to the news. Elrond noted how nervous the young elf was and put a hand on his shoulder as he spoke softly to the young elf.

"Thank you for telling me this Meldiron, but please understand that I am not mad at you, nor anyone else. Now go and care for the horses and send for your brother, Maeron." Elrond gave him a smile as he headed off.

"What am I going to do with those two?" Elrond asked himself as he headed for his study. He had to inform Thranduil, Elvenking of Mirkwood and Legolas' Father, of his son's disappearance. The noldor elf was about done writing the letter he planned to send to the Elvenking when there was a knock at the door.

"Yes?" Elrond asked without looking up.

"My Lord, you asked for Maeron?" came the answer from the other side of the door. Elrond put down his quill and got up out of his chair.

"oh yes, come in." he said as he folded his letter up and placed it in an envelope. The door opened and Maeron and Meldiron walked in both bowing their heads in the same manner. The two bothers looked very similar, they both had long dark hair as most noldor elves do, but while Maeron was a Warrior, his younger brother was more skilled in the healing arts, and was being taught by the sons of Elrond, and occasionally Lord Elrond himself. In addition to this, Maeron was taller and clearly older than Meldiron. Elrond nodded slightly and Meldiron left the room. Elrond picked up the letter and gave it to Maeron.

"Ride to Mirkwood and give this to King Thuranduil." Elrond smiled as Maeron's eyes widened when the elven lord addressed King Thuranduil, he lightly patted him on the shoulder

"May speed be on your side."Elrond said and sent him on his way. when he had gone, the elven lord walked out and looked around a little, not seeing who he wanted, he walked outside into the gardens, still not seeing who he was looking for.

"El!" Elrond called and waited for a moment and was about to call again when he heard something in a tree nearby he walked over to it and looked up, and sure enough in the tree sat his sons, with mock innosent looks on their faces. they were Elladan and Elrohir Peredhil, the twin sons of Elrond.and to some of the residence of Imladris, most often to Elrond's life-long friend, Lord Gloifindel, they were the two biggest pranksters in all Middle Earth. the Identical faces looked down at their father both having heard their father, call them by the nick-name they shared. Their father looked back up at them with a questioning look on his face, he had no idea why they did not come when he called them, it was nearly impossible that they did not hear him, he was confused. When he was about to speak when Elladan began to talk.

"Ada, it was just a little fun..." he started off nervously. Elrond instently knew the 'fun' they were talking about was more than likely a prank. Elrond looked at his sons trying to keep his face and voice strict, but could not keep a smile forming at the corners of his mouth.

"Oh really." he said seriously. "well then you will have some explaining to do after you go and fix what ever prank you are referring to, for I know not of what you speak." Elrond said trying in vain to bite back the chuckle that escaped his lips as he stepped aside so his sons could get down. "come down." Elrohir glared acusingly at his twin, and if looks could kill, Elladan would be mortaly wounded right now. The two lept to the ground with ease, all the while Elrohir maintained his death-glare at his brother who had a very helpless look on his face

"Go." Elrond simply said pointing at the main house. the twins ran off before they got into more trouble. "Meet me in my study when you are done!" the elf lord called after them as they opened a door. Elrohir nodded and followed his elder twin into the main house. Elrond shook his head, those two had walked on the grounds of Middle-Earth for over two and a half millennia but they acted as if they were still elflings. But Elrond knew when called upon, both Elladan and Elrohir had a serious side to their personality. He sighed as his attention was directed back to the situation at hand. Estel.

Elrond sat at his desk once again as he heard a knock on the door.

"Come in." came the reply. the twins walked in, their dark hair idedicly fixed into the type of braids elven warriors use to keep their hair away from their face, Elladan mainly clad in blue while Elrohir in green.

"You wanted us ada?" Elrohir questioned as he sat in a chair near the door. Elladan seated himself in an arm chair by his father's desk all the while silently watching his father.

"Yes, it seems your brother and Legolas have gone missing again, their horses returned without them this morning. I have business to attend to here in Imladris so I will be sending you two to track them down, if you do not find anything come back here first, I will not have all four of you out there falling off cliffs, breaking bones, and being captured." The elven lord said with a hint of dread at the end of his sentence

"We will leave at first light tomorrow." Elrohir said after talking with his brother. Elrond nodded his head once and the twins got up and left to go and get ready for the jouney ahead of them.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"You're sure we got the healing herbs?" Elrohir asked for the second time

"Yes I am *sure* we got the herbs Elrohir!" Elladan replied, wishing that his brother would just trust him. He then lifted the pack containing the herbs in the air as proof for his twin brother. Elrohir threw his hands up in the air as to defend himself from his brother's teasing,

"Hey, I'm just saying you never know what those two will get into." Elladan rolled his eyes,

"Come, we must finish before the morning is spent." with that they both mounted their steeds and rode off in the direction that their brother had ridden of into not a fortnight ago.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Elladan knelt down to the ground, orcs had been here, lots of orcs. He desperatly hoped his brother had not been caught in a mass this big. he looked up and scanned the horizon. they could be anywhere now. He mounted his horse and caught up with Elrohir.

"What was it?" Elrohir asked as he twisted around in his saddle to look at his brother quizzingly.

"Yrch tracks, not four days old. From what I can tell a massive amount of orcs are-or were-headed due south, for what reason I do not know, but I fear for Legolas and Estel, the orcs' trail intercedes the main road through the misty mountains." he replied, a troubled look on his face. Elrohir nodded slowly. His fears confirmed, he nudged his horse into a canter.

------------------------------------------------

Aragorn stood frozen a not-so-comfortable half standing posision in the tree, the beings-whoever, or whatever they were-came over the hill just as he was about to sit down, and since the tree was bare of any leaves, and he could not see who he and his elven companion had become unknown company to, he stood compleatly still. Though he did not know who was there, nor did he dare try and determine that at this moment, he could see confusion written clearly over Legolas' face, he just looked at his confused friend for a while and then became painfully aware of the throbbing in his right hand caused by the frozen solid branch he was holding onto for support. He shot a impatient glance at Legolas which was retured with a puzzled look from the prince, an almost amused look. Aragorn looked at the prince with an arched eyebrow, all the while wondering if he looked any thing like his father when questioning he and Legolas about one of their misadventures. Legolas smiled, clearly revealing to Aragorn that yes, he indeed looked just like Lord Elrond, as if about to give a lecture. Then Legolas nodded in the direction of the beings (who were compleatly oblivious to their company) and loosed the death grip he held his bow in, then looked at Aragorn and then once again nodded in the direction of the beings. Aragorn nodded and silently shifted to jump down out of the tree. As he moved his right hand, he felt it suddenly warm to the point of where it almost hurt, then it started tingling because of the return of feeling. Looking down, he noticed his had had aquired a strange purple-ish brown hue, noting this, he started clenching and unchlenching his fist until his hand regained some blood flow and the sensation went away.

Legolas silently jumped to the ground and landed in a crouch posision, almost cat-like. Aragorn followed in the same manner, but he landed with a slight thud. Legolas just barely held on to his bow and Aragorn let go of his hilt, the 'beings' they had thought might be a threat were mere children! The one that looked to be the eldest turned around and imedietly got in front of whom Aragorn presumed to be his younger siblings.

"Who are you and what do you want?" he asked, staring at Aragorn with wide eyes.
Aragorn put his hands up for but a few seconds,
"Peace, we mean no harm, we are but travelers looking for directions, for by what we can figure, we are very far away from our homeland." He replied calmly. The boy still looked unconvinced, 'I suppose it is good for a boy his age to be protective of his family.'
Aragorn mused to himself. He guessed the boy was about 17 or so, and with him were 2 others, both were girls. All of then were unarmed, and he guessed the girls to be around the ages of 14, and 8 or 9. he wondered what they were doing out here alone but did not let the thought linger in his mind for long.

"Would you like us to lay down our weapons?" he asked the boy with an honest expresion. The wary boy nodded slowly in response still staring at the ranger and occaisionly at Legolas, who had not spoken and barely moved. Aragorn turned on his heel and nodded at Legolas, who then put down his bow, quiver, and knives. Aragorn followed suit and layed down all his weapons as promised. Aragorn stepped forward and extended his hand out,

"My name is Strider, ranger of the north and this,' he motioned toward Legolas, 'Is Legolas of the woodland realm, and as I said before, This is defiently not our homeland." at this comment the eldest girl spoke,

"You too?" her voice was heavy with sarcasam.
Just then two small brown figures that Legolas reconized as beavers appeared infront of the boy, both talking to him at once. 'Wait a minute,' Legolas thought, '*Talking* beavers?!' Legolas just stared at the strange creatures for a moment and then considered that he more than likely looked quite strange staring like he was, went along with it and tried to listen to what the small beings were saying to the children who seemed to be attempting to do the same thing. He then glanced over at Aragorn and saw complete confusion but determination. All Legolas could make of the words being spoken were mostly warnings such as 'Don't trust em'!' and 'What do ya think you're doin'?' and all of them were said with a heavy accent that he did not reconize. As he was trying to sift through all the information that was being thrown at his elven ears he heard Aragorn interupt.

"Excuse me!' no one save Legolas seemed to hear the ranger, 'Hey!" Aragorn attempted again to gain their attention, this time at least the eldest child turned to him, and gave him an apolgetic look, and then redirected his siblings and the beaver's attention to Aragorn, who cleared his throat.

"Excuse me, but we really mean no harm, but we would please ask you to tell us where we are." he looked into the eyes of the two eldest children with an honesty in his own eyes. Just as one of the younger ones was about to speak, one of the small beavers spoke instead.

"You too?' he asked, after reciving blank expresions from both Legolas and Aragorn, he continued, 'Oh, here we go again, ok look, you're in the land of Narnia. Are you from Finchland as well?" the beaver sounded impatient as he pronounced the name of the strange new land carefully. Legolas noticed that the other beaver and younger children would acasionally look around nervously and every time there was the slightest sound they would try and determine where it had come from. Something was following them, he concluded. As Aragorn talked with the beaver Legolas directed his attention and senses to the world around him, the bare trees, the smooth white snow, and the many rock boulders that surounded them. Hearing what sounded like small feet running across the snow, he then directed all attention to the area directly behind the children's company. squinting his eyes try to concentrate on the sounds, his eyes soon looked like small horizontal slits untill they suddenly opened. Legoas quickly ran to his bow and quiver and knocked and arrow,

"Get down!" he said as he drew the string back to under his chin, Aragorn looked up wide eyed and imedietly tackled the children onto the snow. There was a whir sound followed by a loud thump and a high pitched yelp. The ones on the ground looked behind them and saw a wolf lying dead in the snow, the light breeze playing with it's long grey fur.

"Wolves hunt in packs, there are bound to be more of them. We need to find shelter now." Legolas explained as he hurridly strapped his quiver to his back and tossed Aragorn his weapons. The others still looked shaken by what had just happed and did not move much. Hearing another wolf not far off in the distance, Aragorn quickly picked up the smallest of the children an put her on her feet,

"We need to move now!" he said as helped the rest of them up and lightly pushed them toward where Legolas now stood. Now seeming to get a grip on the situation, they all followed Legolas who held his bow in his hand, ready to fire, Aragorn made sure they all were moving and then followed up in back, ready to fight a large pack of wolves. As they ran in the general direction of what looked like a small forest, Legolas suddenly took a turn behind a very large rock, once around the corner, Aragorn saw a small cave that would hide them from anyone passing by. As they all crammed into the rock inclosure, the children tryed franticly to calm their breathing and become as quiet as possible. The pack grew closer, they could hear their paws make make a soft sound as they ran through the snow. Then the sound grew louder, and slowed in pace, then stopped all together. After a dead silence, confusion once again wrought itself in the faces of the prince and ranger, for one of the wolves began to speak.

"We continue east, they might be on their way to aslan's camp by now. And be prepared, you all saw what happens to those who arn't. They die." the voice sounded commanding, and was followed by a loud wolf howl, proving that these were wolves. After they were sure they had long gone, Legolas, Aragorn, the children and the beavers all got up and stood there for a moment, then Aragorn decided to break the silence.

"Well, that was interesting. But I don't believe we ever caught your names." he said, trying to lighten their situation.

"Oh, terribly sorry,' the eldest said as he extended his hand toward Aragorn, 'I'm Peter Pevencie, and these are my sisters, Susan and Lucy." Aragorn and Legolas both shook their hands as he introduced them oldest to youngest.
"And this is Mr. and Mrs. Beaver." Peter finished, gesturing to the two beavers who waved at them and in turn Aragorn and Legolas nodded in greeting. After re introducing himself and his elven companion, Strider went over to where the wolves had been and was surprized at the size of this pack, it was very unussual for wolves to travel and hunt in a pack this big. Yet, it was also very unusual for wolves to talk too. Aragorn silently laughed at this thought and determined that the wolves were indeed heading east, well for the most part, weather the wolves knew it or not, they were accualy heading more south than east. After tracking the wolves for a while Legolas and Aragorn took the company to another rock formation of sorts, there were three large rocks creating three walls while the fourth 'wall' was a pine tree that looked quite dead, and several twigs and branches from it lay on the ground below. As Aragorn and the children got a fire going, Legolas used the last light of the quickly disappearing sun to hunt. He returned with only a small snow rabbit it would be enough for he and Aragorn, and the Pevencies and the beavers had some food of their own. After their meal they all gathered around the fire and Legolas explained where he and Strider had come from, and that he himself was an elf to which one of the children who he remembered to be Lucy said some nonsense about elves being small jolly creatures with pointed ears and helping a man in a red coat. Legolas did not quite understand the part about the man in a red coat, but as far as he could see she was mistaking hobbits for elves. After explaining their homeland, everyone became quiet until Aragorn spoke.

"Earlier when the wolves passed us that wolf, the one that spoke, he said somthing about 'Aslan's camp'' He paused,'who is Aslan?" Aragorn's face looked quizzical and Legolas leaned in to hear the answer that had also been on his mind. Mr. Beaver put down his small cup of water (melted snow) and then spoke.

"Aslan,' He said with reverence, 'Is The king of Narnia, The great lion, The son of the emporer across the sea, the list goes on and on. But the thing is, he is the one true king of Narnia" As Aragorn and his friend took in all this, they both knew at that moment that this Aslan was good, kind, strong, caring, and wise. and Aragorn now wanted to meet him, and somehow felt like he knew Aslan, like an old friend, or a respected teacher. Then he was abruptly brought out of his thoughts as Mr. Beaver continued,

"And we are goin' to his camp to help fight against the White witch." Legolas' eyebrows rose,

"Fight? But you are all unarmed, and although I am sure the children can fight,' he paused 'Would you put a child into battle?" Legolas stared at the beaver, expecting an answer. The children seemed not to be offended by the elf's comment, and silently watched Mr. Beaver as he started to explain.

"Well you see, there is a prophesy..." And with that he continued to explain the prophesy of the four thrones and Aslan's return.
