The elf and ranger jogged through the western forests of Mirkwood. They had left Legolas' home about a day ago and now they were looking for shelter as lightning flashed through the night sky.
Aragorn clung to his cloak as he followed Legolas through the wood. They had been out here for at least two hours, and a fear started to cross Aragorn's mind.
"I don't want to get sick, I don't want to get sick, I *really* do not want to get sick!" the young ranger chanted to himself in his head. He dare not say such a thing out loud, for even in the rain his elven friend could hear the faintest whisper.
"Legolas, where do you plan to take shelter?" Aragorn asked the prince, who seemed to not know where he was going.
"I am working on it." Leglas replied, understanding the message Strider was trying to communicate. Legolas scanned the land around him, seeing nothing but trees. Although his compainion did not reveal this to him, the elven prince could sense that Estel was anxious to get to shelter. Aragorn came up beside the elf and followed his wandering gaze.
"I see nothing." the human complained, sighing heavily through the rain.
"There are always the trees." Legolas said, trying to be helpful.as he turned to his friend a shadow of dread crossed aragorn's face. No. Never again.
"Legolas, I am *not* going to take shelter in a tree again. You know what happened last time!" Aragorn looked absolutly horrified at the idea, but a smirk slowly spread itself across Legolas' mouth as he remembered the last time they were in a situation like this.
"We could always rope you to a branch. Then you might not fall of." Legolas teased Strider, who looked none impressed.
"Of course, you might wake up up side down. That would pose a problem." Legolas continued to smile a lop-sided grin at Aragorn, who glared at him with a look of death. Legolas turned back to look around when Aragorn muttered something under his breath.
"What was that mellon nin?" Legolas asked, turning to Aragorn with an eyebrow raised. "By the stars!" Aragorn thought, "Does that blasted elf have to hear everything I say?!" Aragorn looked up at Legolas and replied,
"I said, mabye we could find a dark, dank, spider-infested cave instead." Aragorn cleared his friend up on what he said with a dull voice. Now it was Legolas' turn to look un impressed.
"No." He replied firmly. Legolas then turned but did not catch the grin his response had gathered from the ranger.
"Come on, mabye we will find something." Legolas called out to his friend who was behind him. Aragorn nodded and started to look for something that could serve as shelter. Sure enough, about a half hour later, they found a small, hollow oak trunk. The elf and ranger crawled into the small space, and found that there was barely enough room for each of them to lay down in. Great. Ah well, given their current situation, this was where they were staying. Aragorn quickly made himself comfortable in the rotten oak, while Legolas on the other hand, was have a bit of trouble finding a place that was not already occupied by a large root. Aragorn silently laughed as his friend moved around the tree, trying to find a comfortable spot. After Legolas finally settled in, he spotted the smirk on Strider's face.
"What's so funny? Your the one who picked this place. Legolas said as he brushed away some twigs from under his leg.
"I know, I just thing it's funny that you suggested a tree and know you are complaining that we are staying in a tree." Aragorn replied, a grin still plastered to his face.
"Yes, we are in a tree. A tree trunk." Legolas protested, but he knew he was losing this arguement.
"It's still a tree." Aragorn pointed out. Legolas looked dully at his friend trying to hold back the smile that crept at his lips, but failed as a grin spread across his face.
"Fithly human."
"Prissy elf."
Legolas smiled, shaking his head. He then lay down on the dirt beneath him, which was a bit damp from the rain.
"Goodnight mellon nin." Legolas said as he half closed his eyes.
"Good night Legolas." Aragorn replied.
"And Legolas?" Aragorn asked, without moving.
"Hmm?"
"At least it's not a cave." Aragorn said calmly to the prince. Legolas felt like hitting the ranger upside the head, but he did not feel like moving so he just rolled his eyes and tried to dismiss the matter.
"Goodnight Estel." He said once again. Aragorn smiled at his friend and then drifted off to sleep, hoping he would not catch a cold.
Legolas sighed and smiled to himself. Indeed, at least it was not a cave.
