That's one of the best parts about reading. Being able to perceive things in your own way. How the books come to mean something special to you. I think that the idea of Lothlorien as a haven is a correct one and one with which the general consensus would agree. I guess I really did feel that way about it, but you put that idea into words.

I think I am agreeing with both of you, Eä and Tinuviel’s Tears—truth is truth. It is not hidden from our vision. Confucious said, “Three things cannot long be hidden the sun, the moon, and the truth.” Cultural relativism, that is so vogue in our world today, denies that there is any such truth. But what is truth if it is not absolute and binding on all? If not, then chaos would rein in our reality. To say “there is no absolute truth” is an oxymoron because the logical response is “are you absolutely sure of that?” It is totally illogical to make such a statement, since it is an absolute statement that in itself denies absolutes. It is, in essence, saying that the very fact there is no absolute truth is the one and only absolute truth.
Martin Luther King, JR. confirmed this when he said, “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”
It matters not what world religions or great men may think or believe. No one has a corner on inspiration and truth, although fragments or sizable amounts may be found in the words of many. Anais Nin said, “When we blindly adopt a religion, a political system, a literary dogma, we become automatons. We cease to grow.” I believe our hearts bear witness to truth in each one of us—we can respond to that or run roughshod over it to our injury. I liked your statement about personal interpretation Eä. In the Christian bible it says, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” To every man truth comes and our destiny is determined by whether we accept it or not.
The search for truth is a lifelong quest in this life but I don’t think that is bad. I remember what Albert Einstein said, “The search for truth is more precious than its possession.” Isn’t that a great thought? Tolkien was certainly on that quest. I think Anais Nin could have been talking of Tolkien, “The personal life deeply lived always expands into truths beyond itself.” The legacy that Tolkien left us in his books certainly is doing that.

uhm I think it's one of the best parts in the book, true, but you know, I rather prefer some others, such as dunno, Fangorn Forest, Rivendell, or even the Final Battle and the moment in which Frodo throws the ring...in the film I always cry when Merry screams FRODO! and the book made me tremble when I read this part ^^

^Yes, Lothlorien is also one of my favourite places, besides Mirkwood, Rivendell and Rohan.

I liked your post about truth Sinbearer. It was very........... true. The truth is always the truth, no matter what, but some people perceive the truth in different ways. Tolkien had one idea of Middle-earth in his mind. That idea, his vision, is the truth. It is the true Middle-earth. However, as readers, we each have our own vision of Middle-earth. Not the same as the true version, but still not a fallacy. Just a different view. Tolkien's will always be the original world, but everyone sees it differently.
Alright. I think I am way off in a completely different place than what you meant, but that's an idea.

Eä wrote: Tinuviel's Tears wrote: I agree with you both. While Tolkien was definitely a dedicated Christian and many if not all of his stories have a Christian theme, I don't believe he was trying to create a new Bible. I like to think that Mmiddle Earth was like the place inside of his head. That special one that you go to when you dream sometimes, or when everything gets to be too much, or even just to visit. Tolkien was just able to make his come out on paper. But maybe I'm not making any sense..... While many of the values in Tolkien's works were Christian, Christian values are often merely the values of a good person. Bravery, honor, compassion, love. These are not just the marks of a Christian, but the marks of a person with a truly good heart. I might have mentioned it before somewhere, but I don't like the idea of Middle-earth being squeezed into a certain cultural or religious frame. Everyone is inspired from everything and anything, and Tolkien naturally draws on all his experience, memory and thought... he would most likely havve been inspired by Christianity (Catholicism) as well as other world mythologies. I fully agree with you T.T and Elwing and Eärlinde... (yea I'm so boring, not much to discuss here). But I like your thoughts on the topic, so very true they are!
Thank-you, Eä! I agree with Tinuviel's Tears. You're not boring! You're quite logical, actually. (Sorry if that sounds weird. Loopy on cold medicine.)

I know I rather like reading Ea's posts. They make me think. It makes for good discussion. I'm glad you agree with me by the way. I don't think you sounded weird either. And I do things a lot more loopy on cold medicine. (The worst involves naming sticks of honey. It's a long, sad story. )

I wonder if Galadriel is part of what gives Lothlorien its magic? Do you guys think it would be the same without her? just as ethereal and mystical? Or do you think that part of Lothlorien is because of Galadriel?

Gimli would certainly have an strong oppinion in answer to your question, Tinuviel's Tears. And he was there! Read about it in one of my fav exchanges between the two close friends in the last few paragraphs of Farewell to Lorien.

Oh I have always loved that scene! I was so dissappointed that they didn't have Galadriel giving the Fellowship the Gifts in the movies! I thought it was so sweet that Gimli asked for her hair.
I also love the part where Eomer says something insulting about Galadriel and Gimli defends her, they argue, etc. Gimli says he'll forgive Eomer because he's never seen Galadriel, else he would go to his axe. Then later, Eomer sees both her and arwen and tells Gimli to get his axe because he would count Galadriel the most beautiful but for Arwen.
Sorry about the muddledness of this post. I do love the friendship between Gimli and Galdriel though.

How could I forget? It's Frodo's birthday of course! Bilbo's too I suppose, but I always think of Frodo more (actually, it's my mum's birthday too, but I still think of Frodo more. Oops.) I have it in big fancy letters in my planner. We're celebrating it in the E/F club! I can't wait!!!
That's kind of off topic, but at least it's LOTR related.
