I appreciate the comments and strong oppinions many of you have here. Some of you have inspired me much since I discovered A-U with your knowledge and insight into LotR.

Having read biographies of both men, I have to say I am in awe of both Tolkien and Lewis. And not just their works but their lives. Both LotR and The Chronicles of Narnia are as separately unique as the men that wrote them. As my boys and I have been making our way through both worlds I’m not sure I can differentiate between them as to how much we enjoy them and how much they teach us. I believe that these 2 sagas stand alone in literature. They have a timeless quality. No other twentieth-century writers more masterfully married the enchantment of fantasy with the enrichment of life and faith. Their power to uplift as well as entertain is unrivaled. As has been said elsewhere, these stories are like a meal with the nourishment of meat and vegetables but the taste of cake and candy.

I am simple blown away by the depth of Lewis’ and Tolkien’s stories. Everyone in here knows how complex, multi woven and meaningful are the plots, characters and story lines in LotR. Yet as I have read, discussed and written about the Chronicles of Narnia with/for my boys, I can’t say that these books are any less so.

Even though LotR was not written for children, my children can understand much and so enjoy it. We underestimate the minds of children a lot. And even though Narnia was written for children, their depth, wisdom and complexity challenge the wisest philosophers and theologians.

What is the secret of their power? As only fantasy can do, these stories take us into the world beyond our vision…a world that we can only enter by faith. Both children and adults must open themselves to deep questions that cannot be answered on the surface…deeper truths and realities—realities that transcend this world. As we enter these worlds, we embark upon an inner journey to that which is best within us and we are invited to enter our lives in a deeper way—to become the men and women that we were meant to be.
This is the power of ME and Narnia.

In LotR, as well as The Narnia Chronicles, these great men invite us to take this journey beyond our normal senses of perception into the land of mystery, wonder, and “magic.” In the end all I can say is that these two sets of books are very dear to me and I bless the men who wrote them and the day I discovered them.

Ehm, not to push any buttons or anything, but Haldir, could you be a bit more specific about what you disagree with? Just curious...
