I was reading a forum on another site last night, about the Hobbit movie, and people were discussing the matter of PJ making it and such.. every couple of posts, you'd get a 'hater' critisising Peter and Rings (and Kong).. I know better than to get worked up about these people, because they mostly do it for a reaction and because they have absolutely no knowledge of Peter,LotR or Tolkien... so i kept on reading the forum.. then I came across one rather angry and serious 'hater' who was claiming Professor Tolkien was one of the most racist people of his time. RACIST?!!! And this wasn't any brainless low-life (dont get me wrong.. they were a lowlife alright.. just not a brainless one) searching for attention and reactions.. they knew a fair bit about Tolkien and his works.. but they were putting our proffesor down really bad.. and my heart grew hot with anger as I read what they were sayin 'bout Tolkien.. (sure enough after that, they had a dozen loyal fans threatening and cursing them.. and, they havent posted anything else since...thank god)

So.. I was wondering how you guys deal with hater's in rl and online.. Because right now.. I'm becoming quite fed up with them..

It's really simply. I just tell them "Ata miquela yrch", which (though I probably mispelled it) means "Go kiss an orc" in Elvish. They look at me, and I just tell them to go and figure it out themselves, they'd know better if they lived LOTR. :D

Well if someone doesn't like Lord of the Rings, i usually respect their oppinion because at the end of the day it's not me that doesn't like it and it's that person's oppinion, however, as with all things, if they take an oppinion too far and start to offend me, I just tell them nicley that there's no need to be talking like that about my loves when I am quite willing to accept theirs even if I do not agree with it. I would just ask nicely for a little more respect and if they continue to talk so abusivley, i would report to a moderator at that forum who would probably issue a warning.

Laboe vi Orodruin! (Go jump in Mt. Doom!)

I usually demand a reason for such ridiculous thinking. Usually they can't defend their criticism and I win. XD

If they can come up with something, I usually have proof that shoots that down. If I can't come up with anything:

I remember that Tolkien doesn't CARE if you don't like it! He wrote TLotR for the sake of telling a story:

Some who have read the book, or at any rate have reviewed it, have found it boring, absurd, or contemptible; and I have no cause to complain, since I have the similar opinions of their works, or of the kinds of writing they evidently prefer.
From the Foreword of the Second Edition of The Lord of the Rings

For all we know, Tolkien may have very well been a racist. In the early 1900's it wasn't very uncommon to have hostility towards people of a different ethnic background. Most of the bad guys in Middle-Earth do have a darker skin tone - at least that's how they were portrayed in the films. Coincidence or not? I guess we'll never know.

As for the haters, they are very much entitled to their opinions as far as I am concerned. I do not think they express their hatred for attention or for a reaction, they just simply dislike it.

But this is only my humble opinion of course ;)

Well they could always have been going for the burnt look ... after all they WERE tortured, mutilated and filthy. That's just the typical look really ... Can you imagine tortured and mutilated creatures being white? And Saruman was white ;)

Ah yes but Saruman was good once ;)

I'm not saying the Uruks, Goblins, Orcs and others don't look cool the way they are with their filthy dark skin, I'm just saying that often in old litterature, the bad guys are often people with dark skin and LotR is no exception

Hmm yeah it just gives us the dark feeling. And Saruman went on to "Saruman of Many Colours" (or something like that...) not Saruman the Black/Dark ... so it's not always that way.

Well, in grades 7 and 8 when I was pretty immature (I look back on those years and cringe, I really do) I foisted LotR on everyone, no matter who, so I can't blame them for hating it from being so sick of hearing me talk about it. However, I don't believe that anyone who is putting down LotR can know how much work, research and life went into it - this was, essentially, Tolkien's life work and I don't think anyone who has seriously thought about that can have anything other than respect for him, even if they think his literature less than up to par.

And as for racism - I don't think that thought ever entered Tolkien's mind. I don't. I think he needed enemies, and Orcs are by no means a Tolkien creation, he had a base to work off of. Also, the people of Haradwaith are desert-dwellers anyway, it makes sense for them to have dark skin.

So were orcs... :bye:

Alright, how do we deal with haters? I think every community should have their own manner of dealing with them. Some are really easygoing and allow people to say things like that, while others immediately ban the person who said it.

I think ignoring that what bugs you is the best way. But that's very hard... *looks at above comment on quote again* :-D

Well, I don't get mad at them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. In fact, I can often understand why some people don't like it - for those who don't have my interests, it can seem rather long and boring. In fact, sometimes I'm surprised anyone else besides me loves it as much as I do. Just because we're different doesn't mean that the 'haters' are worse off than we are. They have their own paths to happiness, I'm sure. :)
However, it gets curel when they decided to tease and make fun of us. We don't do it to them - they should just leave it alone, or give it another go and see if LotR maybe ISN'T all that bad.

Yes, you put it as I would,~RinielAranel~. In fact I have had people give sane explanations why they did not like LOTR without saying that is is wrong or stupid to like it. I usually go by them. The case is most often it is too boring, slow and "nerdy". But not everybody likes everything. I actually gain respect for the person that simply puts their opinion as what they thought of it, not what they would like it to be.

Haters actually still make me feel quite angry. But I usually just try to shut my mouth and ignore them, because they're just not worth wasting my time for them.

Usually...the reason i hear most often for not liking LOTR is bcause it takes too much thought and not a lot of people can be bothered to take the time to really invove themselves in it. What i like lol is the fact most LOTRR haters like Harry Potter and we all know she stole almost everything from Tolkien...how amusing. I think in essence she added in a few characters, the school instead of the shire and simplified LOTR for those people who don't like it or appreciate lol. Don't get me wrong, i like Harry Potter but you know...

As for the Rasicim thing, Gothmog was white as a sheet, so was wormtongue. Nothing to do with rasicm at all. The fact that black is dark and most of the orcs are covered in dirt too give us a sense of uncleanness, where as Galadriel all dressed in white and really pale gove us a sense of pureness and hobbits in earthy colours show us their love for the earth etc. It's all for a reason...not rasicm. ;)
