yeah, how can they know if they've never tried it? it's the same with children: "I dont like spaghetti." "HAve you tried it?" "No, but I don't like the looks of it.." *sigh* well, they're the ones who loose such an experiense.

I guess it's their loss, but really, I fell bad that they are missing out on the wonderfulness that is LOTR. It's rather sad really.
Why are people afraid to try new things? And LOTR doesn't even look bad. It looks awesome. It looks amazing. Who wouldn't want to try it? And yet, people don't. They must be crazy.
*sigh* Ah well. At least we have a mass wave of Ringers here who sympathize with us.

^yep. and LotR has so much in it: the whole history of elves, and Middle Earth. And all the different languages, and poems, and individual stories (like Arwen's and Aragorn's story, for example) there's so much to learn in all of Tolkien's writings and languages, that it keeps one busy studying them. And I think it's fun to learn new things about Tolkien and his works. When I read all of the Harry Potter books, I knew after that everything about the whole story of Harry. There's nothing more than the plots of the books, but when I read LotR, many things were still unclear to me, so I read it again, and again, and again. And still, I know only a few phrases of elvish. And I don't know much about the history of Middle Earth, so I'm going to read the Silmarillion and other books. And learn more elvish. Namarie, everyone.
(ps. Sorry for using Harry Potter as an example, there are loads of other books that I could've used as an example. But H.P was the first thing which popped into my mind, because they are ok books.)

I actually really like HP. They'll never be as good as LOTR. Even though I read HP first. But you're right. It's no where near ass intricate as LOTR. There's one main story, not thousands of sub-stories making up one glorious story. They're both good but LOTR, well, it's just better. Tolkien poured his entire self into LOTR. He gave all of him to the books he wrote concerning Middle-earth. He was just, one of a kind. We don't have authors like that today. Authors who give themselves solely to their writing. Tolkien was a dying breed. But he also wrote some of the best books this world has ever seen, or will ever see. So that's my speech about Tolkien.

*nods* ^I absolutely agree. And yes, Harry Potter is good, but nowhere near Tolkien's writings. I've also thought about what you said, many times, that Tolkien was (is) one of a kind. There is, and I highly doubt there ever will be no one that could match him. As Michael N. Stanton says: The Lord of the Rings should be the standard by which all other books should be measured. <true. Always, when I read a book that I think is good, I compare it to LotR, and then I go, nah, not as good as that.

I think I have learned not to attempt to compare things to LOTR because it's never as good. No matter what book it is. I don't think LOTR should be a standard for comparison for other books , but rather something with a status all it's own that nothing could reach. Tolkien was like no other man that ever breathed, and his books are like no other books that have ever been. They're just special in an indescribable, incomparable way.

^mm. *nods* but I just haven't decided what the something different in LotR is. And I don't still understand my friend who likes Harry Potter like she'd die for it, but doesn't like LotR at all! I just have to persuade her to watch at least FotR and tell me what she thought about it. Do you think this sounds like a good idea?

^yep. the Dark Lord... in both of the books. A hero who is unlikely to change the course of the world.. in both books. I can't remember all the similarities I've figured out right now.. but which came first?? LotR of course. GO TOLKIEN!

well it is a little hard to get into in all honesty. I think, however, that only if you are really interested in the story, are you able to fully get into it and read it. It's a little ardious and hard to understand at first but it's easy to catch on from Shadow of the Past. That's where i begun to really catch on to what was going on. It is a good way to begin though because it means we get a good look into the everyday life of a hobbit, i love that!
Rock on Frodo!
lol.

I think that the beginning is very important because without it we wouldn't know how anything had happened or how the journey began!!!!!!!!

Whoa!!! Galadriel2812, HP is not stupid, nor a copy of LOTR. I've read LOTR many times, and all the HP books, and they are all excellent in their owns ways. Anything that gets kids to read (and Adults too) anything beside the usual mindless drivel that spout out of most writers, is refreshing.
LOTR is by far the most "classic" of the 2, but we shouldn't criticize either. Let us also not forget Tolkiens friend's work of Narnia.
By the way, I love the lil' hobbit on your middle banner, she was such a cutie.

you are making sense. the beginning is quite misleading and I was like, what? And the pace is very slow, which makes it hard to read (I think). once I got to the part when the four hobbits are on the road, it all kind of unravelled a bit and it began to get easier to read.

I would say that for people who aren't really wanting to get thrown into the book and who aren't too excited about reading them it could get a little boring, but it's rather interesting. I guess I'm saying this from a fan's perspective, but I'm trying to think 'outside the fan line'

The prologue is a little boring but once you start the actual book it's captivating and interesting! It sucks me in everytime!
It makes me soo proud to see this guy at school reading LotR! I don't know him but eventually when he is not listening to music while he reads "I'm just going to walk up to him and say, "Lord of the Rings is awsome. I'm glad to see someone else reading it besides me." Unfortunatly many people in my school class do not like LotR here in Covina. That is partly why I come on the forms so much.
I'm starting to wonder if anyone has actually tried to read it.
But, serriously I love the beginning of FotR! It is soo good! I don't know why people think it is boring!
