gandalf in the book also says in the water it became slimy somewhat like a serpent if my memory serves me, so i guess that could be an example of my theory that the balrog couldve changed form to have wings, and the shadow was probably a part of teh balrog itself and so could transform also into wings

Are you sure thats not them talking about the creature in the lake?
Anyhoo, I have come to the conclusion (after reading all this wonderful information) that Balrogs are indeed made of shadow and flame, just as the description Gandalf reads while at Isengard states, and because it is made of shadow it can change its form to have wings or not.

Ack! I just read that too! I can't remember his exact words though. It's in TTT when he's telling Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn what happened to him. Now I'm more confused

Naaah, they don't have wings that works. Just some shadowy thingies sticking out of their backs... It may look like wings, but it's not. It is their will. If they have a strong will, they have huge shadowy thingies. If they have a weak will, just some pointy and shadowy toothpicks... I think

'Pointy and shadowy toothpicks...' cool thought! And the stuff about how strong their will is, that's really interesting...haden't even crossed my mind.

I don't think so.It doesn't really need to fly.

Well, my friend says that they got wings as a remainder. She said she read somewhere, that they did use their wings long ago, but now they don't really need them. You know what I mean .. (guess it was my badest english-sentences ever... sry.. I'm a bit in a hurry)[/i]

Yes, I think so, too.. Sounds logical to me.
I mean Penguins still got wings, too, but they're unable to fly..
