I just read that story last night in the Sil, and I'd have to say that it's one of the most beautiful love stories ever told.
I disagree with everyone who's saying that Liv Tyler would play Luthien. I thik she's a brilliant actress, and I loved her as Arwen. Ah, but..... Arwen. therien lies the problem. She is already so fixed in my mind (and probably most other people's) as Arwen in LOTR that I don't think they would use her as Luthien.
It would be a difficult movie to cast. Huan would be hard to do as well.
I'm also afraid that they would deviate to much from the original story, or overly dramatize the love scenes and make them ridiculous.
Overall, I think that the story already exists as somethign beautiful in my mind, and I'd hate to have that tempered with. But......... if they made the movie........ I'd probably go see it.

i personally think that after the success of lotr its only a matter of time before this amazing story is made into a movie.. and it should be although i would be worried that the film would not do the book justice but i really hope it is made cos it would make my entire life sad ino haha

I rally hope they make it into a movie. I would be amazing. But I hope for a good director too. I don't want it turned into some trashy romance film.

I read it was a opera that was performed in Britan in Sept.

Hmm....I think I could tolerate it if they made a movie out if this.....though a lot of people who hadn't read The Silmarillion would be really confused.

Ugh. That would be like the most depressing movie ever, IMHO. I don't think there's a single happy thing that occurs in that movie except maybe for Turin killing Glaurung.

It is a rather sad tale, but still, sometimes the sad stories can be the best ones. But this is a thread about the Lay of Leithian, so if you guys want to talk about that, you should probably start another thread. Just a suggestion.
It's an opera? That's strange. In a bad way. I don't think I like it as an opera. I just can't picture it. Does anyone know if it's true that it's an opera? Has anyone seen it?

Nauriel Rochnur wrote: Well, Liv portrayed Arwen, who supposedly looked the same as Luthien. So I think if it was doen they would ask Liv to take the role. oh no!!!! that would be very very weird!!! ok liv did a good job of Arwen, but I think it wouldf be a bit too much getting her to play Luthien as well!!!!!!!!!!!! If I had to pick anyone to play luthien... I would pick... oh whats her name? the one who played Miss Swan in Pirates of the Carribean? she really pretty. but i'm not sure really. I don't think Morgoth should be exedingly ugly. He was a valar, and they are all pretty good looking (Or so I'm told) He would probably have that brooding look to him.
I've seen an artists impression of him, and he looks very scary indeed!!!!

I think it would be great if they did a decent job of it. But keep in mind, they'd add a bunch of scenes to have more between Luthien and Beren...no way it could be entirely faithful to the chapter.

I think it would depend greatly on the director and scriptwriters. sorry I haven't been following this thread so i dunno if someone already said these things. I think it might turn out as a big flop because - well, everyone knows what romantic movies are like today. but it might just work out too oh, I wish more movies would be made of Tolkien's works!
ps. I think Keira Knightley wouldn't be good as Luthien. she's too.. non-elven if you catch my meaning. she's more like a model. tho she's one of my fave actresses but still =)

I think Liv would do an even better job of being Luthien than she did playing Arwen, and I would love to see it as a movie as long as they were careful not to corrupt the part where Luthien "distracts" Morgoth...
