Thanks for redirecting me to this thread, Fencing Maiden! I'm seriously obsessed with the idea of fencing, I'm just gonna confess here and now that I refuse to apply to any college that DOESN'T have fencing in some form or another.
For the past few years, I've been doing what I can with a plastic lightsaber, insane SW and LOTR fandom, shieldmaiden-wannabe issues, and a hyper little brother to spar against and I guess I've learnt a few things. In late September/early October I got to learn the basics of stage fighting and it was simply amazing!!! For all of you out there - you know that scene in FOTR when Boromir teaches Merry and Pip how to fight? If you follow through what he's saying outloud, chances are you'll stab somebody pretty well! My brother and I still poke through each other when we pull it off!
Lalaithnindil... I FOUND IT!!!! Dubai actually has a place to learn fencing at... I've been going through fencing sites this night (or should I say morning cuz it's 2 am?) and check out http://www.dubaifencingclub.com/ Only I still dunno how my parents would react to me playing around w/the real thing.

I was going to fence here until I realized how much I missed ballet. But it's just too different here so come next fall I'll start probably, unless I change my mind again.

I'll probably start as soon as my parents are convinced of it... that's why I let it slip to my little brother, who's the expert on getting what he wants.

Back from my first lesson and I just love it! Seriously can't wait till Wednesday for my next one, sooo darn impatient! And I'm starting with the epee, I was shown all three weapons and told to start with either epee or foil but to pick it based upon what "felt right" when I held it. Well, I must admit saber felt best but epee was pretty darn close so that's what I picked. Foil just was awkward for some odd reason...
Lalaithnindil - I managed to convine my teacher to let my brother have a shot at it even though he doesn't fit into the age group and she said yes so you just might have the same luck if you want to. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

Wow, Eowyn, that's great!!! news! I'm so happy for you, and excited that you get to be a part in this incredible sport!!
Ya, different weapons for different people. Epee always felt wrong to me... and foil was better. But maybe that's because I'm considerably short, and my armspan is small.
But I wish you the absolute best! I'll be praying that you excel quickly... and keep on loving it.

Thanks Fencing Maiden! It's just sooo much darn fun! Strange that foil didn't feel as right to me, but then again, I am somewhat tall 5'7" (strangely I'm taller than about 95% of the guys in my year) and have pretty long limbs. However, I shall point out that it = extreme clumbsiness the moment I have to wear delicate shoes or something like that for an outing. Pros and cons to everything!
Lalaith, I know what you mean - I'd probably feel just like that if my negotiations with the parents didn't go as smoothly as they did (I told them that yes, I'd like to learn it, that I DO need some after-school sport since I'm not doing PE this year in school). However, I do admire your devotion. I will pray that God watches over you that day especially and inspires you to do your absolute best.

Thanks... I'm getting really fed up with this dance school and it's the only good one around so definately quitting end of term. I'll talk to my parents about fencing over Christmas break (as well as playing the organ, though that's even more unlikely to happen).

Ooooh! The organ is absolutely beautiful! I just love the way it sounds when I enter the churches back home in Croatia. It just... makes me feel at home. Then again, Church in Croatia makes me feel far more at home than here... I guess that's why I still look at the pictures from my children's Bible that is written in Croatian.
If it's the Ballet Centre you're talking about, I went there then I quit cuz I got angry at my teacher for calling me an elephant. If it's Arabesque you're talking about, what's up with the "no guys may enter" rule? And if it's another one, I seriously see what you mean by there being no other good one around.
Fencing tonight... if I have the energy to go though I am 99% sure I still will because I am that stubborn even when I'm living off 3 hours of sleep thanks to homework madness.

I go to the ballet Centre. Where's Arabesque? Is it RAD syllabus as well? Cuz if it's vaganova..... Anyway... I'm actually leaning more towards the flute if I do play another instrument; which I want to do. Because the organ is practically a hopeless idea, but I love the flute and it's so beautiful.
No guys around is a perfectly lovely rule. especially considering most of the girls are in camisole leotards.
Have fun fencing!

Yesh, have mucho fun in fencing!!
Man, ballet... I took gymnastics instead. Ballet looked too, um, hard. And I would do anything to NOT have to where one of those costumes.
That's cool Lalaithnindil that you talked to your parents. It DOES help so much to be able to practice with REAL fencers.

Hee hee... Ballet costumes? I seriously don't think that one which can fit me would exist considering that I have completely the wrong build to do ballet...
Last fencing lesson was good - I actually was able to persuade my teacher to get my lil 12 year old brother to join the 15 yrs + group even though he's like the size of a hobbit amidst Uruk-hai there. Hee hee!!! But he's having fun and I'm glad that he is able to. Fencing tomorrow, yeah!!! Now i gotta finish history homework even though it's 11 pm if I want to consider even being allowed to go tomorrow, right?
Fencing Maiden, I guess that the first few lessons have gotta be just footwork and the basics, yeah? Cuz that's what we're doing so far and even though I just love love love love love it so far, at around what lesson do you get to actually spar?
Note - My brother also chose epee. He was about to take foil, then he decided to pick epee cuz "he wanted as much space to stab an Uruk Hai as possible" to quote his words... Must say I found that very very humorous... lol. But hey, who said a sparring partner has gotta be an Uruk Hai? The whole joke simply started cuz of height differences...

Oh yes, it seemed like I studied foot work forever before I got to the actual swordplay. Have you learned a balestra yet? Those are soooo fun in my opinion!
Our lessons took a break, and we won't be starting back up again until after Christmas. Waah. I'm going to miss it so much! At least I own my practice swords, and can have bouts with my friends. Our lessons ended with a grand duel though... in which our teacher tested us and put us on a scale of 1-10. I got a 8, which is pretty good! But he kept making me laugh while we were dueling, or else I might have got higher.
Oh, do they make you where protective gear? Ours doesn't, he's so nice. We just have to wear a mask, and becides that we can were jeans and t-shirts or whatever.
That is hilarious about your brother!! I laughed so hard at your comparing him to a hobbit admidst uruk hai! I've felt like that sometimes, because I'm waaaaaaaay smaller than all the people in my class. And the boys are none to gentle with me either... But it's all good, I love the challenge.
Now for you people who aren't in lessons... question! Do you think you will ever take lessons in the future? Or... do you want to?
