 I wasn't implying it about you. I've heard very harsh talk in other threads about copying tolkien's stuff. There are some people who think that Tolkien invented the idea of an epic (again, not you). I understand that authors do borrow things from each other, but saying that things let you down because they were just - s of LOTR (again, not you) is kind of untrue. Whether it borrowed things or not, it adds its own new ideas to it that alter it and make it something new.

Yeah, even if Lewis did 'borrow' a few ideas from Tolkien for Narnia, Narnia is like 100% different almost from lotr

-The stories are really short not long like LOTR
-Narnia books are ment for children mainly
-Narnia is more fairy-tale lke
-Narnia is not as detailed as Middle-Earth

see my point :)

big apologies if i offended people by getting a bit cheesed off. i do totally understand what you're all saying.

while we seem to be on the topic of lewis borrowing stuff, there's an anglo-saxon story called the voyage of st brendan which was clearly a massive influence on voyage of the dawn treader. i just had to read it for one of my lodules at uni and it's a crazy story, especially given that it's meant to be biographical, but it is worth a read. it's published in the age of bede.

i think it's also interesting to note the similarities in style between the chronicles and the hobbit. i'm not saying that was a case of copying though - it's clear that the two guys, despite their arguments, were really quite alike so it's natural that they would have similar styles. the personalities of the two men really shine through in their children's fiction and i think you can see from reading it why they were friends. they certainly had the same sort of humour and love of word play.

Anotehr thing I would like to complain about the Movie, as that, PETER RODE, yes let me say RODE a Unicorn!!! And Edmund WAS RIDING a TALKING, TALKING!!! HORSE! Now, in Narnia they never and I mean NEVER ride Unicorns or a Talking Horse of Narnia-not even Archenlanders ride them. But Talking Horses only get ridden in time of war, but Unicorns...no, never.

^I noticed that! It was sort of weird. Though I did love that line... "My name is Phillip." :D

I just hope they dont do anything like that in Prince Caspian.

The only one who has ever ridden a Unicorn ws King Tirian. Only because they needed to escape from the Calormens.

I know! that really bugged me. :disgust:

Personally, I wish they would go back and instead of making Prince Caspain, would make a "The MAgician's Nephew". That was my favorite in the series. :) I loved the part when Aslan created Narnia... ooh... *shivers in delight*

anyhow, the movie was pretty awesome. But! Unlike LotR, the books were much better. I think in LotR, the books and movies and equal, each special in their own way. Sadly, the movie Narnia did not portray the complete spirit of Narnia, the way that it could have.

I think it did. Sure, they added extra charatcers like Mr. Fox and Orieus, but I thought they stayed close to the book.

i have to disagree. the lotr books are far far far far far (you get the picture) superior to the films, which didn't do justice to the brilliance of tolkien by half; but i think the narnia film was very nearly as good as the book - it was extremely faithful in plot, character and essence, and the only thing that makes the book that little bit better is lewis's wonderfully chrasmatic narration. i really missed his little asides about how lucy was smart and left the wwrdrobe door open but edmund was an idjit so he shut it behind him, but obviously they couldn't do that in the film.

Yeah, Lewis always repeated "For it is foolish to shut oneself into any Wardrobe, even if it is not a magic one'

It's all in personal preference dahlin', all in personal preference. ;) So 'm not going to debate with yaz on that point... because although we don't admit it, we're all of us quite bias.
