I think it is fair to say that a lot of books do tend to have similar meanings and references to Tolkien's books. Whereas Toliken took soke of his his inspiration from relatively unknown sources, books that have similar scenes, situations etc, will immediatley be compared to and with Tolkien's work.

I think to say The Chronicles of Narnia was copied from Tolkien, frankly shows the ignorance of the person who said. As both C.S Lewis and Tolkien were friends, there was bound to be encouragement and ideas given to either party, so that certain essences of each book found it's way into the other.

Now, I'm not saying getting inspiration from other authors is a bad thing, but frankly, there are too many *fantasy* books being written since the release of the films for people not to say, "hey they're copying Tolkien!". If these books had been written before 2001, people woul not mind, but the sudden boom in these kind of books, does make people suspicious.

For example, Aragorn-Eragon. I have never heard anything similar to Aragorn in my life and then here is this book called Eragon. Now I ask you, of all the names in the universe, commonly used or made up, why did the author choose that one? Surely he/she must have known the similarities would cause people to be suspicious? And surely to save all the arguments, another name would be better. Because immediately, people will think the entire book is a Tolkien rip-off.

Perhaps. My brother, a rather big tolkien fan at the time, picked up the book with no problem. I understand that there were names that were similar, and I do agree that Christopher Paolini should have rethought the name, but it still doesnt make the book a - . They are two completely different authors with two completely different styles. Every single name in Eragon could be the same as in LOTR, and it would still not be a - . Why? Eragon is not like Aragorn. They are two different characters. If names influence the quality of a book, then I dunno what this world is coming to. I respect all of your opinions. This is solely mine.

But surely if a fantasy book was published called The Complete History of Arnia, then something like that would be a just cause for people to think "Narnia rip-off" even if it actually wasn't. I believe in the indviduality of books. I believe that people may look for inspiration elsewhere, but to use similar names from other famous books (names that would not often be found) shows to me a lack of imagination or a hope that people will read their books, due to the similarities. In this world of so many ideas and thoughts, and with the whole fantasy genre being re-awoken, I see no need for people to read modern day stories and think "hmm...that is very similar to a scene in......" or "that was descirbed the same way as.....". I like to read original material, with thoughts that came from the author's mind, and if the author was insprired by other books, at least let the inspirations seem to be their own work and not someone elses.
