I have known of this series for many years, but have never read it, possibly because no one I knew had any idea what the first book was... And then I forgot about them.

Well, the first book is "Redwall", so that should simplify matters.
I just started High Rhulain last night, and it's pretty good. I just lose myself when I'm reading Redwall- they're such good stories.

Kudos to Kitoky for the fabulous signature set, and art credit to engelszorn.

Personally, I didn't enjoy High Rhulain that much. I've become mildly disillusioned with the Redwall books recently, I've read all of them, but I haven't enjoyed the later books as much. I think part of it is probably because I've started analyzing what I'm reading more over the past couple of years, but I think it's also because the plots have suffered. In Redwall and the early books, the protagonist(s) were outnumbered and inexperienced. That is still the case in many of the newer books (such as High Rhulain), but a good bit of the tension is gone. It's been quite a while since I wondered whether or not the protagonist was going to survive, or even how. In High Rhulain (I hope I'm not spoiling anything for you Nienor) it was simply too easy. The puzzles especially bugged me, they just solved them one after another. There was no agony, it was more like a treasure hunt (and a pretty simple one, too). I'd like to see Brian Jacques write a new Redwall books with a little more conflict in it, not one where a dual between the main protagonist and antagonist could essentially be declared "no contest."

I used to love Redwall, but I love LotR much more. But they are still great books. Did you guys know they did a cartooon series of Redwall and Mathias?

Yeah, my family used to watch those cartoons just for the laugh factor.
I don't think you've spoiled anything for me. I have a different mindset reading the books than I used to- I just suspend my disbelief and enjoy it. I know they aren't always realistic or consistent- but they're just so enjoyable. I can forget about everything else and be a little kid again when I'm perusing a Redwall book.

I think I've seen a snippet of that cartoon somewhere... *racks brain*
Re: Mindset
Mmmm, being able to suspend disbelief can be awfully convenient at times, unfortunately I'm far too logical to be able to do that very easily. I've still enjoyed reading the Redwall books, and will probably continue to read any new ones, but I wish they were of the quality of the first few.
