Mort gulped a big clump of dry spit. He looked at her torn, bleeding form with enough fear to make him pass out.

Nate giggled at Shannon and Mr. Shooter shook his finger at him, "Now boy, don't laugh at 'er because your daddy could soon end up lookin' like 'er."

Shannon took a deep breath and then looked to where Dan had been dragged out. It reminded her of the sounds she had made just earlier. "You have to be careful, Mort... they'll do this to you too." She whispered and felt tears reach her eyes. "Don't listen to a word they say. They... they..." She looked down to the ground and swallowed hard.

Mort's neck was poking straight out now, listening intently to her raspy words. "What? Shannon! They will what?!" He was growing eager, anxious, and a terrible feeling started creeping up inside his gut.

Nate jumped off the cot and ran toward Shannon's side. He stared at her face closely and then said, "What happened to her daddy?"

Shannon slowly looked up to Mort and swallowed hard. "They'll drug you." She said softly and felt tears slide down her blood-stained cheeks. She looked down to her shaking hands and then wrapped her arms around herself.

He ignored Nate and Shooter, and concentrated on Shannon. "Drug me?...As far as I'm concerned that would never happen."

Shooter poked Mort on the shoulder and said, "I think yer son asked you a question, Mr. Rainey. You should answer him." His eyes were wide with urgency.

Nate continued to examine Shannon's face and then looked toward Mort again.

Suddenly, loud streams and horrific shouts were heard outside of the cell door. They seemed to be coming from down the hallway....they were Dan's screams.

Mort looked away from Shannon, towards John Shooter's dominating eyes, towards Nate, then towards himself.
Wait...himself?!
"I told you this would happen Mort..." said the mirrored image of Mort across the room.
"Wh-what?" Mort responded in a panicky way.
"You did it, did it all, you deserve this. This is how it happens to people." The image of Mort blinked calmly and examined the crazed hair, half mad man standing across from him.
"No...this has to stop! I have to make it stop! Make it stop...make it stop...make it stop..." Mort repeated over and over and over to himself.

Shannon watched Mort sadly and sighed. "I tried escaping the police... I tried my hardest, Mort. I really did." She then broke down in tears. She covered her face with her hands, so she wouldn't have to look at Mort.

Nate leaned away from Shannon for a moment as she cried. He then began to laugh evily and point to her bruised and battered face.

Shooter's gaze left that of Mort and turned toward Nate. A slight smirk cracked on his face.
