Well it looks like the Dems took the House and the Senate. And I didn't realize that this was the first time in history a woman was the leader of the House. That's pretty cool .

Ivreniel wrote: Voting on this ballot was different as well. You simply used a black pen to fill in the circle of your choice, the name of the person or "yes" or "no" on propositions. I'm accustomed to pulling and pushing buttons and levers. Not filling in three looooong pages worth of circles. This isn't supposed to be a test! I voted later than ever before too. In the past I've made it to the polls pretty early. Tuesday I made it only an hour before they closed. It was buuuuu-sy. They hadn't prepared for that number of people; there weren't enough booths. The poor workers got out folding tables and set them up. I had to set at a table with two other women protecting my ballot as much as possible. Though probably they were doing the same and there was really no worry. I wonder if, since we're supposed to have private ballots, that was really even legal to have us vote in the open like that. As soon as I finished I had to carry my ballot over to a fourth worker, who showed me how to insert it, one page at a time, into this copymachine-type machine, where it swalloed my ballot, listed what number voter I was at that particular poll (784) and said "Thanks for Voting!" That was it, but what a different experience.
Mmmm...well that's crazy how you guys had to vote differently. But the way you described it, is how we, in Montana vote. We vote with paper ballots (and not pens) but pencils. We're fairly unique in that way. It's better to have a paper back-up if anything goes wrong. In which, it actually did...but it's better than messing with technology if something goes wrong.
About the voting in public, that's a little crazy. But I don't think anyone was expecting the turn out that happened this year. I mean, it's a midterm election...usually not that many people come out. I, thank goodness, went early. But I heard, that all around the state, people we waiting in line well after the polls were supposed to close...but being as it's our right, they have to let those people vote. What an insane election, eh?
BR-yup. We now have a MADAM Speaker, which is exciting. A little sad that this is the first time in U.S. history that this has happened. A little disgusting as well...but...I won't get into that here. And Congress is back under the control of the Democrats after 12 years. Pretty insane.

I have no idea what the speaker of the house does .
I think the fact that the Dems are back in control after 12 years just shows how fed up people are at the moment. Things just keep going in the wrong direction but that could have happened with any party in power. I guess I shoud just leave this alone because I don't want to offend anyone or get too far into politics.

Quote: In the United States, in the U.S. House of Representatives and in state legislatures and local government councils, the speaker is usually selected by the members of the majority party and functions as a leader of that party. Thus, though the speaker is expected to be fair, he or she uses procedural rulings to advance the causes and agenda of his or her own party. Ceremonially, the speaker may represent the whole house, but politically he or she is the legislative voice of the party in power.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives in the U.S. Congress is second in line for succession to the presidency: should the president and vice president be unable to serve, the speaker becomes president.
Thank you Wikipedia. Ha ha ha. Like it says, she, Nancy Pelsoi, (I'm so happy I can say that now... ) is basically the head of her party (the Democrats) and the head of the House.
I'm right with you Banana Republic...it's hard not to go off on something like this. I'm a Political Science major...I could go on and on and on about politics, so you can understand that it's difficult for me. Ha ha ha.
And Ea, the U.S. Democratic System is ridiculously confusing. It's actually a "republic" but yeah...okay, need to stop my Poli Sci boring-ness.

Thank you MontanaBohemian (your name reminds me of the Dandy Warhols song Bohemian Like You - love the song!! )
Yesss Wiki is our preciouss friend!!
Owh... by the way, her name's Nancy Pelosi, aye? I knew it was something with P... but gave up on the rest...
I'm majoring in International Development Studies, and just finished a course on Pol. Science, but we focused mainly on development countries and their governments and governance. It's been a while since I had a general a Pol. Science class - I must say I'm a Humanities student at heart.
Hmm... a republic you say...don't get me started on the whole What is Democracy-debate...!!!
Hmm... since the elections are over in the U.S. I guess we should move on to other topics. What do people here do? High school, college, working? Majors, interests, hobbies?
And would any of you be interested in talking religion or politics over PM? Sometimes I get a certain topic or question in my mind, that I'd like other views on, but I don't want to randomly spam people!!
Finally, I'm hanging out here way too much for a non-member. May I officially ask to be admitted to the Alliance of Voters? I have voted twice for the national/regional elections...

I'll talk to you about religion and politics over pm if you want. I'll admit that I'm pretty strong in my beliefs about both but I'm also open minded and will respect your opinions.
And as for me, I'm studying at a university to become a historian. I'm excited because I'll get to take a Renaissance and Reformation class with a bunch of juniors and seniors and I'm a freeshmen . I love history, I want to be one of those historians on the history channel lol.

Though, that's not what inspired the name...can't really remember where I came up with it...sooo long ago. Eä wrote: I'm majoring in International Development Studies, and just finished a course on Pol. Science, but we focused mainly on development countries and their governments and governance. Hmm... a republic you say...don't get me started on the whole What is Democracy-debate...!!! Oh that's cool!! I'm majoring in International Relations (and apparently Comparative Government... ) which is lots of fun. I was originally going to major in Research Psychology, but the class load was ridiculous. I mean, if I just majored in that, I'm sure I would be fine. But that's my problem. I can't decide on anything. If I had my way, I'd probably be in school forever! Ha ha ha...See I also want to do Technical Theatre, Archeology, History, and Meteorology. Weird combination, eh? Ha ha ha. How I settled on Political Science is beyond me. I suppose it has to do with my thinking how apethetic this country has become and the fact that we need more people understanding how this government works and how politically outspoken I've become since...*cough* the 2000 elections and *cough* and an invasion in 2003. But the International Relations came from me always wanting to work at the United Nations and travel abroad. Ha ha ha. But my mom says basically all you can do with a Political Science degree is go to law school and become a lawyer. YUCK! Ha ha ha...which is funny, because my mom's a lawyer. Had enough of them. Even all my friends think I should become a lawyer...and I tell them, if they are willing to pay for it, I'll do it. Eä wrote: Hmm... a republic you say...don't get me started on the whole What is Democracy-debate...!!! Ha ha ha...I know what you mean. It's so confusing...like we're a democracy but a Republic. Yay for History!!! That's SO exciting! I LOVE history!!! And that's so cool you're a freshmen in classes with juniors and seniors! That's pretty amazing! I might be in that situation next semester...only because I was an over achiever and did all my prereq's in a year... "One of those historians on the history channel"!!! YAY!!! That'd be so much fun!!! I watch the History Channel too!! Maybe some day I'll see you on there!
Wow. I really need to stop writing so much. ...

Owh... thread lives... so much to catch up on....
Banana_Republic, thank you, I might PM you sometimes then... nice to know who is interested in those conversations.
And the same to you MontanaBohemian!
By the way, I think you once stated how you got your name in one of those threads on usernames... I just forgot why... (nice new avatar by the way!)
I'm too lazy to copy and paste what you said... but I know what you mean about choosing major... In fact I'm also gonna major... or minor... in Communication... it will also broaden my future job profile... at least this was my *cough* carefully prepared master plan!! lol Well, actually it wasn't... sshhh... but that's the way I present it when people (read: family and peers) ask!!
Sidawethiel, does your university shamelessly disregard the need for this world to be saved? Hmm.. in fact I would also like to do Middle East studies or at least learn Arabic...
MontanaBohemian wrote: And I'm sure Ivreniel will make you a member! Yay!
I hope so too... otherwise I'll just keep spamming the thread un-officially!!
Err... you don't have any wierd inititiation rites or somehing... including cheese and poetry recital on ancient languages?

Oo, Middle Eastern studies, my University offers that, I think it looks pretty nifty. Hehe, Arabic, I'm currently learning that, it's awesome, many times it makes way more sense than English.... I like how it can be Verb Subject Object or Subject Verb Object....It's cool I highly suggest studying Arabic, because it's such an interesting language and fascinating culture.

Hmm all I can say in Arabic is Salaam aleikum, and that wont get me much farther than the greeting...
Anyway...elaborated topic suggestion since we are talking about our current occupations.
When you were younger, what did you want to become when you 'grew up'?

Ha ha ha ha....Ea took the words out of my mouth!
What did I want to be when I grew up? (Well...I don't ever want to grow up as Peter Pan said....)
The only thing I can really remember is wanting to save the rainforests and the endangered species. Mmmm....oh! And be a photographer/filmer for National Geographic....

The only things I can think of are librarian, meterologist, or teacher. I've gone for the latter.
Librarian, because I love reading, and I was the kind of girl who was always urging my friends to read this book or that book. As a very small girl I used to play "story time" with my dolls just as they had it in my local library.
Meterologist because I love weather. Changes. Subtile or dramatic. It's fascinating. I was never skilled enough with math for that, though
Teacher. Well, what can I say? I love learning, I love children. One day I hope to teach my own children at home, rather than just everyone else's children at a private school or sunday school.
