Erin gave him a look. "Point taken," she conceded. "Yes, let's make camp. Easier to try and decipher it then anyway."

Adam heard the last part of the conversation-he was glad to hear the words "make camp". He climbed down out of the back of the humvee, still carrying his bottle of water. He walked over to Erin. "Do you have the map handy?" he asked. "I've been thinking about it and have a couple of ideas that might lead somewhere on that language."

Erin nodded. "Yes, one minute - " and snatched it from the passenger seat of her Humvee. "I've had few ideas as well," she told Adam, showing it to him. "The figures represent words, not letters, most likely. In these primitive ones there's usually a repetitive word for king or god, which I've been trying to find, but what with being chased by rabid wolves and all" - and here she waved a hand expressively in the air - "I'm afraid I just haven't had time."

She grinned up at him. "But let's discuss it once we've set up camp, hm?"

Adam took the map gently from Erin-it was old, and he didn't want to harm it. "That makes sense." he said, looking at it. "About the symbols being words." He handed it back to her. "We can look at it later-right now I am eager to get camp set up."

Erin slipped it into a plastic sheet protector in her Humvee, where she kept handy equipment such as that, and tossed a small tent and an unbelievably tightly rolled sleeping bag out of the back of the vehicle.

Wolfe didn't bother with his own tent - making himself too comfortable meant lowering his guard, and lowering his guard would likely mean another close encounter. He did, however, snatch a few MREs. He tossed the packaged meals at Adam and Erin with the words, "Happy dinner."

Then he grabbed his M16 and went to scout the perimeter.

Anna Marie stayed in her humvee, and grabbed a book out of her bag. Her cold demanor somewhat softened, but she didn't notice as she started reading.

Andy suggested, "We can take watches throughout the night, from what reports you have been able to send out, I don't think that there are a lot of good things happening. I can take first watch with someone, i have been doing nothing but sleep on that plane."
Then, after he heard about that map, he added, "And may I take a look at that map later? i DO have some experience in the field of codes and codebreaking."
Andy didn't take out all his equipment, but merely took out his equipment suitcase for his sniper rifle, and began setting it up behind the top of a hill in this terrain [wait... are they in a jungle?]

Erin looked after Wolfe with a bemused sort of expression on her face, as if wondering where this rather antisocial brusqueness was coming from. She tossed the food into her bag and said as an afterthought to Andy, "Oh, yes, you can have a look later this evening."

Setting up camp, she shoved her sleeping bag into the tent and wondered if Wolfe would be decidedly against a fire before deciding that he would, and abandoning the idea. Opening her food, she spread the map in front of her and stared at it, eating absently while making notes occasionally in a little spiral-bound book.

The jungle closed in around him as he trudged silently over the thick underbrush. Exotic birds sang in the canopy above him, and unknown critters scampered up lush trees. Always was that incessant buzz of a million insects filling the air.

Slapping away a mosquito, Wolfe scanned the serried foliage through his night-vision goggles. The ever-humming jungle induced a surreal sensation. Gradually, without even registering it, his keen senses relaxed. His M16 loosened in his grip....

As the night got darker, Erin put down the map and frowned. She'd made some headway, and discovered the symbols for 'king' and 'ocean', but Wolfe still wasn't back. "I'm going to go see where Wolfe's gone," she called to the others.

Erin fished through her backpack for a flashlight and started a little ways into the jungle, making sure she had her gun. "Wolfe, where are you?" she called, her voice echoing a little.

Shade ecknowledged that Erin had left as she started to draw gecko tracks in her notebook from the ground. A flahslight was strapped to her head so she could finish drawing in the darkness.

It took Wolfe three full minutes to realize that something was wrong. He froze, instincts buzzing. Slowly, deliberately, he brought up his M16. What was it? He couldn't hear anything -

The answer struck him like a lightning bolt. He couldn't hear anything. The harmonious hum of a contented forest was gone, replaced by an ominous silence.

A twig snapped to his right, followed in quick succession by a streak of silver.

He dove and spun, firing a powerful barrage off his assault rifle. When his haze cleared, he saw a spear embedded in the ground two feet away. He also saw blood pooling around a dark form in the underbrush. He advanced, smoking M16 in hand, to investigate...

Without warning, something impacted him hard from the side.

Erin jumped at the sudden noise of a gun firing - but she couldn't tell where. She could feel the hairs on the back of her neck rising. She didn't get creeped out easily but this dark jungle was something else. Whipping her radio out of her belt, she said tensely into it, "Hunter, this is Sparrow. Do you copy?" and waited for a reply, anxiously scanning the jungle.

((That's my feeble attempt at walkie-talkie lingo lol))

Wolfe tucked himself into a ball and rolled, coming back to his feet. With supernatural agility, his five attackers charged him at once. He glimpsed tall figures with skin of shining black and muscles that defied all reason before the fell backwards again, the wind knocked out of him.

"Hunter, this is Sparrow. Do you copy?"

"Sparrow!" he gasped. "Don't come - oof." It was like being crushed under a mountain. The five assailants pinned him to the ground, literally beating him up like bullies on a playground.

And Nicholas Wolfe, prestiged captain of the USMC, was getting his ass kicked.

Erin looked at her walkie-talkie, puzzled. It had emitted a burst of static that sounded like "Sparrow" and she hadn't caught much else, though there had been something there. She frowned. Something didn't feel right.

She backpedaled a few steps, making sure she could see the camp and Shade's flashlight, and decided to do a round of it to look for Wolfe. After all, as long as she was close, nothing could happen. Erin stepped farther into the jungle until she could just see the light and began her walk, calling out every now and then. She couldn't hear anything, which concerned her, until she got about halfway around and heard what sounded like a distant thump.
