well from what i heard(i think from the guide to tolkiens middle earth) was that only galadriel, gandalf, sam, and tom bombadil (the very wize and very simple) were not affected by it, it is an interesting topic.

^And really, of those four, ONLY Tom Bombadil wasn't even tempted by it. I mean, in RotK Sam has to work at giving it back to Frodo, and Galadriel and Gandalf tell us that they greatly desire it.

Quote:
The Istari could've been tempted by it (and one of them was), while Tom could put the Ring on without it affecting him and see someone who wore the Ring

Interesting note. And, I think if my memory serves me right (sorry for being a perfectionist) TWO of the Istari were tempted by it: Gandalf and Saruman. Plus I guess whatever was in the water in front of Moria, maybe. :bounce: That kinda makes me think he's not a Maia, because he really isn't like them at all. He married, for one thing, and he didn't seem to come to M.E. for any specific purpose, etc.

I was kind of annoyed when they didn't put Tom in the movies, too. And he's kind of an intereting character too.

The book The Tolkien Companion, by J.E.A Tyler, suggests that Tom is a Maia, perhaps a servant of Yavanna. I agree with that, but I also think that he had more power than some of the other Maiar. The Istari could've been tempted by it (and one of them was), while Tom could put the Ring on without it affecting him and see someone who wore the Ring.

nice theory but just one thing makes me confuzed - Tom says something in the style "Tom was here before the hills, before the sun" - something like this (can't check because i dunno where my bookey is :'( :'( )

You're right Elf Girl, but weren't the Valar and Maiar there before even the creation of Arda? Couldn't Tom have settled in Middle-earth while the Valar still lived there?

I agree with you on most of your points Gloredhel, but didn't Melian marry?

My theory could be completely wrong though. :bye2:

Hmmmmmmmm.....that is a good point Sithiel but I must object saying that Galadriel and Sam were indeed tempted by the Ring.
Remember in Lothlorien when Frodo offers to give Galadriel the Ring, and she goes totally berserk saying "You offer it to me freely.  I do not deny that my heart has greatly desired this.  In place of a dark lord you would have a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn, treacherous as the sea, stronger than the foundations of the earth!  All shall love me and despair!"
and in RotK Sam almost seems to have doubts on whether he should give the Ring back to Frodo, he begins to think of himself as powerful and bieng called Samwise the Brave.

But I'm still not quite sure why Gandalf and Tom were not tempted at all....

well alltho galadriel and sam did hesatate, and go berserk both could refuse it and that is the main thing that matters, in my opinion

It probably took a lot to refuse such a powerful thing like the Ring.

some of you may find this interesting: "beorn is not seen after the hobbit, but in a litterary sence he is the forerunner of the more deeply realized Tom Bombadil. Both are wary creatures, misliking the great concerns of other peoples.both are their own masters, under no enchantment but thier own; but old bombadil is song incarnate, and his power greater than Beorn's. He would be last to be conquered if Sauron had the Ring." this is a quote from the tolkien reader, by J.R.R.Tolkien page xii (tolkien's magic ring, which is a note written by Peter S. Beagle)
