You know . . . I think that's very well said . . . I especially agree with how Arwen "goes into hiding" after Flight to the Ford - she takes on a different look - much more refined. Even her hair is different afterwards.

Like Nienor, I used to so not like Arwen either - I did find her annoying - but now, my opinion has slightly changed - because her fate is really really really sad - and the scene in TTT, called "Arwen's Fate" (I think) emphasizes that. And it makes me so sad to see her walking alone in the woods, heavily cloaked - and then I start feeling bad for Aragorn, because even when he was aware that she would be crossing the sea westwards, he still continued to be valiant - despite the thought that the one thing he wanted most in the world since his manhood was now lost . . .

*grabs a tissue and blows her nose*

Anyway . . . this thread is actually very interesting . . . everyone's opinion is unique and intriguing - and still we're managing to stay out of a fight.

I totally agree with the above. It was so sad seeing Arwen struggling between her family and her true love. And poor Aragorn! He really is a strong souled guy seeing all he has gone through.

And yes, I love the way this conversation is going. You all are so cooperative. :)

Arsarniel, I totally agree with everything you said :)

Like a lot of you, I did not like Arwen for a long time, but I've grown to respect her and see her strength, even though it is different than Eowyn's. Eowyn is still my favorite lady, however. I absolutely adore the love story between her and Faramir, its possibly my favorite part of all 3 books.

Am I the first person to say I didn't originally like Eowyn? It took me ages - a lot of rereading of Eowyn's scenes and other books about LOTR - before I really understood who she was, and felt much sympathy.
I originally was annoyed by the way she "threw" herself at Aragorn, I just couldn't understand it.

I think in being able to see her weaknesses, I was then able to understand and appreciate (if that's the right word to use) her strengths. I think once I understood where she was coming from, then she impressed me. But I took awhile to reach that point.

Arwen for me has that romantic appeal. I think I must be a romantic at heart or something...
(But of course, I'm a Galadriel fan until the end... :p)

^Your not alone Herenya!

At first I didn't like Eowyn either. I didn't really feel any sympathy toward her like I did to Arwen, I mean Arwen's story is so sad. I'm a bit of a romance and I really liked Arwen's romance with Aragorn a lot more than Eowyn's romance with Faramir. I guess that was becuase I knew the A/A story a lot better than the E/F one. Plus, Eowyn kind of annoyed me because to me she seemed "evil" trying to get Aragorn to like her and everything.

In the end though, I grew to like her and realized that she sacrificed just as much as Arwen and they are wonderful heroines both in different ways. The E/F romance has grown on me also! :)

I have a hard time choosing. I like Eowen because she is a stong character. Eowen would be the type of girl that would go out camping and on long treks with Aragorn (I refuse to believe that Aragorn settled down and stayed in his cute little city, just cuz he's king)
But then, I like Arwen because she is willing to give up her immortality to be with the man she loves. Like the saying goes, opposites attract. They are not quite opposite, they both have a royal feel to them, but they are still more different then Eowen. Arwen is calm, cool, flowing, beautiful (in the pretty way. We all know that Aragorn is beautiful in the rugged hot look) while Aragorn is more wild. He goes on adventures, and is not afraid to get dirty. Arwen would make him wash his hair.
And of course, if Eowen got hitched with Aragorn, who would Faramir get?

lol :) I very much do agree! I doubt he stayed in the gondor. He probably had a lot of traveling to do to keep things at peace.
Yeah, he would definetly need to wash that hair a bit more often. lol
Faramir and Eowyn were made for each other. Aragorn adn Eowyn just wouldn't have been right since Arwen and Aragorn truly loved each other.

It is so hard to choose between these two characters. In the books as well as the movies they are both strong in different ways. Eowyn is strong. After all she is a shieldmaiden. I agree with the idea of woman being able to fight along side the men and not just sitting home and minding the house and children. I think women are strong and able to do much. Arwen on the other hand decides to give up her imortality for the man she loves. That is a great sacrifice. She is strong in a different way that eowyn is. Arwen suffers much. Her father does not want to leave her, but reluctantly gives permission. That is hard to bear. Overall I cannot pick one character. I love them both. Dfferent things about each woman.

I was going back over the book, cuz my friend said that there was nothing going on between Aragorn and Eowyn, and now I would have to say that I would most definatly think that Arwen and Aragorn. I was reading, and it had dialogue of Faramir talking to Eowyn about how she really wanted Aragorn because he was going to be king, and she wanted to be know among people, and be a queen that people would look up to. That just doesn't sound right to me. And she really loved Faramir. And he was so sweet. *happy sigh* Any way

Yeah, he would have to keep his hair somewhat washed, but did you see it at the end of the movie? Ewwwwwww. It was all perfect and not right! I almost prefer the greasy bloody dreadlocks over it. But this isn't about Aragorns hair (maybe I should make one about it?) I like the fact that Arwen was willing to sacrafice her immortality for him, and as I said before, who would get Faramir?..............
Wait, I'll take him!

I must say, I feel more akin to Eowyn than Arwen, although I like both their characters. However, I was just slightly disappointed in the film's interpretation of Eowyn's character. Sure, she is a fighting woman, but that was the only way the movie portrayed her. It is true that Eowyn is capable of going and fighting alongside men, but did Tolkien really want us to only think of Eowyn as a 'power to women' character? She's more complex than that. Like it's been said, Eowyn gave up her pursuit of warfare and becomes a healer. She makes a complete turn round from taking life to giving life. I'm not belittling Eowyn's strength of character or abilities, but she is more than what a lot of people think.

I was disappointed in the way they portrayed her as well. I thought they did a good job in TTT, but RotK made her seem... I don't know the word. In the books, Eowyn was a very complex character, with many layers (like an onion). The movie made her seem kind of cliche. She was a fighter woman, end of story. In the book, yes, she's a fighter, but she's also delicate and fragile (nothing to be ashamed of). She was breakable. And she had been broken, and never completely healed-- until she met Faramir and accepted his love.
