Edward tried to lift his 'metal' head, but more, now than ever did it feel too heavy to raise.
Instead, Edward raised his twinkling eyes to the little flower who looked prettier than ever to him. All the tiny brown curls bouncing when the child giggled, the red and green ribbons that her mother had carefully twisted into Lucy's strands. Her babydoll velvet green dress, with white lace decorating the skirt merrily looked like a brand new Christmas doll out of a package next to the dusty, unwanted, torn doll named Edward.
"Okay..." he said gently in a quiet voice.

Lucy smiled a cheesy grin filled with holiday spirit and then pulled Edward off the couch. "Okay, now...." Lucy said in a motherly like tone, "Stand right here and stick your scissors straight out in front of you." She then ran to the ornament boxes and began to grab some in her small arms.

Katherin set the hot tray of cookies on her kitchen counter, so that they could cool. She smiled a little and then grabbed the tray of hot chocolate that she had prepared a little earlier. The drinks were still nice and hot.
She slowly walked out into the living room and saw Edward in front of the Christmas tree. This made her smile more. "I have some hot chocolate, if anyone wants some..." She said softly and set it down on the coffee table.

Edward's eyes were still gazing upon the tinseld covered carpet. He raised his scissorhands up, only to see them trembling and shaking unwillingly.

"Oooooo!!! I want some!" Lucy shouted as she ran toward the hot chocolate mugs. She still held some oraments in one of her hands as she drank slowly from the mug. "Mmmmmmmmmmm! Thanks mommy!"
She ran back toward Edward with her feet bouncing softly in the carpet, "Hold these." Lucy then began to place the oraments with their hooks on Edward's scissors, making him look like a Christmas tree himself. "Oh, Edward, you're shaking. Are you cold? Do you want some hot chocolate to drink?"

Katherine smiled at Lucy and nodded. "You're welcome." She said softly and then sat down on the couch, next to her husband. She sighed happily and crossed her legs, while watching Lucy and Edward, with a large smile on her face.

"No..." Edward said weakly. In the mean time, all he looked at was the tiny, little, red, green and sparkly balls that dangled from his rusty metal scissors.

Lucy smiled at Edward and shrugged her shoulders, "Ok! But you would have really liked mommy's hot chocolate." She twisted her lip and then giggled.
Tugging on his arm, she pulled him toward the Christmas tree. She then gently took off the ornaments that decorated his scissors and placed them on the tree. "See? This is how you help out with the tree, Edward. Thank you!" Lucy was trying to make Edward happy, but it seemed like nothing could make him smile anymore.

Timothy sat up from the couch and touched Lucy gently on her shoulder, "By God, Lucy you did the whole tree!"
He gave her an encouraging nod, but then spoke in a softer tone, "Look, uh Lucy..." He twirled the child around and squatted down, "Why-, why don't you leave Edward alone, I think he needs some chance to, uh, you know...rest."

Katherine watched Timothy and Lucy together and smiled a little. She took a sip of her hot chocolate and sighed deeply. She looked down to her lap and bit her lower lip, softly. She felt really bad for Edward.

Lucy smiled at her father enthusiastically. She always yearned for his attention and when he gave it to her, she felt like a million dollars!
But as her father continued, her face grew serious. She looked to Edward sadly and then to her mother. Why did Edward need to rest?
She then looked back to her father and smiled, "Ok daddy! I'll go make the bed for him in the basement." She then began to run toward the cellar door.

Katherine looked up to Timothy and gently took his hand in hers. "I hate doing this to her too, honey." She said softly and looked over his face, sadly. She squeezed his hand a little bit and sighed.

Timothy ran after his daughter and snatched her up playfully, "Lucy, no, not tonight, ok?"
He then settled her down away from Edward so the mechanical boy couldn't hear, "Now..." He looked down at his child's face, "Me and your mother think Edward needs to sleep on the couch tonight..you know, incase he needs something in the middle of the night."
He looked over his shoulder towards Katherine, then back to his little girl.
