Let them smile;
Another year has passed,
Another twelve months of our precious life,
Yet they celebrate our decay with holly and ivy,
I'll paint my decorations with scarlet and ebony.
Tears are rivers from the soul,

Then my body must leak with joy,
(they think),
But let my eyes show different;
I'll hide them behind a veil of charcoal,
And dress in ivory.
Streak my fingers with vermilion,
We kill with our thoughts,
We destroy without knowing;
Yet we weave tapestries of love and peace;
I'll bring them to life with my voice,
And my tears.
Hang the Eiffel tower with Chinese lanterns,
A celebration of life,
(they say)
Yet I'll hang a garland of roses from my throat,
(They call it vanity)
And I'll unite the departed realms;
Scatter the snow with faery-dust,
And find my wings.
Kiss me and I'll show you,
(It's a dare)
Let the stars weep their transluscent tears,
We'll dye them with vermilion,
(It's love)
Drink from my bleeding fingertips,
Then fly away again;
To the land of black nightingales.
