I just discovered that DMC is still in the cheap theater here! I have a sudden urge to go see it this afternoon...I won't own the DVD for a while, maybe I will...

My older brother brought up an interesting idea at the lunch table today, and I'd like to hear your opinions...
OK, you know the scene in DMC where Jack agrees to give Will and 99 other souls to Davy Jones? And how Jack says he's OK with giving up Will's soul? Well, my brother was saying that what if Jack said he was OK with it because he intended to rescue Will? What if Jack intended to get the heart, control Davy Jones, and make him release Will?
I hope that made sense... anyway, I'd be interested to hear all your opinions before forming my own. It's an interesting thought.

My personal opinion is that Jack was only okay with it because if he didn't agree to Davy's keeping Will, then he was sort of condemning himself. I think he saw the way out of the situation and took it - I mean, face it, he's quite a bit more worried about his own welfare than Will's.

^That's what I'm leaning towards, Melda.

That's exactly what I think! Remember in CotBP, when he tells Barbossa, "by all means kill the whelp."

Jack's priority is always, first and foremost, himself. He'll do whatever it takes to save his own skin, even if it means putting those close to him (if you can ever call anyone truly "close" to Jack) in great danger. Now, once he's ensured his own safety, he'll probably do his best to get them back out of trouble, but it's really no skin off his back if they're lost.

Exactly. And Will knows that - he calls Jack 'more acquaintance than friend' himself; he heard Jack say "By all means, kill the whelp"; and he doesn't hesitate to threaten Jack when he won't give up the compass. Jack's not the type of person to save anyone before himself. Even Elizabeth. Despite what the J/E shippers claim, Jack is not some tortured soul who's found a soul-mate and will now do anything for her.
Wow, I even managed to bring J/E vs. W/E into this discussion. That's pretty sad.

I agree with both PotR and Meldawen. I really think Jack was like "OK, this is what will get me out of this, so I'll do it, and if I happen to have the chance I'll make it right again." He doesn't mind sacrificing poor Will.
And I also agree with Melda on what the J/E shippers say... Jack is not a tortured soul, and Elizabeth is not going to make it all better even if he is.

I sort of enjoy pointing out flaws in their logic, but that's just me. Carry on

and we all like pointing out problems in logic, but this is for general DMC talk, despite how much you might like to blah mouth J/E shippers

you know...i've never really though about it but i think it might kinda make sence. jack is always sacrificing will but if u think back to COTBP he had a plane to save him, thoughy it kind of back fired a little he was still able to save will and himself.
so if u think about it he might have had another plan the save him. thats why he was willing to sacrifice him at that point because he had in his mind that it would be ok.
( but i do have to agree with others on this point: jack does think of him self
in dire situations)

and who doesn't think of themselves in dire situations, its human nature to put your saftey before everyone elses, often we hide the fact, but Jack being Jack, puts himself before others, because thats what he's feeling at the moment, his own skin is more important than his friends
